Free all-in-one GUI installer for Coppermine
« on: December 21, 2008, 06:36:03 pm »

Hi,

At the Bitnami project we have released a new stack for Coppermine. A
stack is a free all-in-one GUI installer that installs Coppermine and
all its open source dependencies (Apache, MySQL, PHP) that works with
Windows, Linux and Mac. It should make it significantly easier for
people to get started with Coppermine. You can check it out here:

http://bitnami.org/stack/coppermine-photo-gallery

If you like it, it would be great if you can put a link to it in the
official download page or otherwise let people know it is available.
The stacks are completely free, distributed under the Apache 2.0
license

Best regards,

Juanjo.

Thanks for your readiness to share. However, we're not actually fond of auto-installers similar to Fantastico (and that's imo what your stack actually is), The only supported install method is the one we describe in our documentation. We're not going to recommend other install methods. The reasons for this policy is the bad experience we have made in the past with auto-installers. See http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/auto-installers.htm#sad_story
Please don't get me wrong: I understand that you're trying to come up with something good for the mutual benefit of both your project as well as our's. However, in our experience it's mandatory to make the user install coppermine by himself: auto-installers only lure people into believing that things will be easy, which is not the case. We consider running the installer that comes with coppermine as pre-requesite to prove the needed skills to maintain the app. If the users can't run the installer, he shouldn't run the app, as he won't be able to maintain it.
Everybody likes easy, but not too easy with security sacrificed in return.

Cheers

Hi Joachim,

Thank you for letting us know, we were not aware of the whole Fantastico issues. We are a bit different in that we also provide and take care of Apache, PHP, etc. and have regular updates. But I understand completely your concerns. We will just keep distributing it from BitNami then.

Have a good new Year.
