[Help wanted]: Translations for CPG1.4.x
« on: July 04, 2005, 10:05:27 am »

After the beta release of cpg1.4.1, there shouldn't be any more changes in the language file structure for cpg1.4.x, so we could use your help:
Translations would be very welcome. Although cpg1.4.x introduces a "language fallback" feature that displays text strings that don't exist in your language file in english, it would of course be nice if we could get as many localizations of coppermine as possible. To read more about how to create additional language files for cpg1.4.x, please refer to the Translator's guide that comes as well with the coppermine package.
Once you translated and tested coppermine into your language, just zip the file and attach it to your reply to this thread (using the "Additional options" link at the bottom left of the page when composing your message).

I will update this thread asap.

is utf-8 being used as the default now?

i have a question about utf-8.
i know it's done automatically, but there are some issues.
i'm able to change the encoding from big5 to utf-8 without problem.
would it be okay if i send you the language in both big5 and utf-8?

Re-thinking the method we used in the past to get our language file: we used to send language files around, which is not a very bright idea, so this is the suggested method:
1) Get the most recent cpg1.4.x package from the download section
2) Get the most recent english language file from the CVS
3) Post a reply on this very thread, saying that you're about to translate language xxx for cpg1.4.x
4) Do the actual translation (take your time, test it on your install)
5) Zip your language file and attach it to a new reply on this board (using "Additional Options" when composing your message)

i've finished traditional chinese.
i've found some problems though.
when the language fallback feature is turned on, and going to admin tools, i get $lang_util_desc_php being called twice.
when the feature is turned off, it will show chinese like it suppose to, but when it's on, it shows both english and chinese.

also when turn on the language flag selection, chinese traditional and chinese simplified is switched.
the flag is correct, just the popup infomation is wrong.

i will edit this post and attach the language when i'm done testing.

thanks

Dutch language file
« Reply #6 on: August 01, 2005, 01:44:00 pm »

Hi,

I have translated the Dutch language file and have included it here (I have no access to the cvs, sorry).
There are still a few entries missing in the english.php file, so I cannot translate them because of some missing identifiers (mainly in the $lang_util_php).

Regards,
Jan Paul

Thanks for your contribution. You can't write into the CVS (after all, it's not a wiki ;)), only dev team members can; attaching it to a posting is the recommended way, so you did the right thing. I merged your posting with the thread that deals with translation and added your file to the CVS (may take some time untill it shows up on web cvs though): http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/coppermine/devel/lang/dutch.php
As the language file for cpg1.4.x have been become much bigger than the those from older versions (due to the increased number of features), it's much more work to come up with a translation, so thanks again. As always, the dutch community proves to be very fast and active.

Cheers

Original authors are encouraged to do the new translations, we just haven't sent out requests so far:

I just sent an email to all members of the translators groups:
Quote
Hi  {$member.name},

The coppermine dev team has released a beta version of cpg1.4.x that has all features the stable version will have as well (there is a feature freeze in place). Right now, we're busy fixing bugs that exist in the beta version. To be able to release a stable version soon, we could use your help once again: as you have contributed to coppermine in the past, providing a translation in your language. We want to ask you if you could do a translation for cpg1.4.x again. You can find details in the thread http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=20355.0
We're aware that creating a translation is very much work, so we're asking a lot from you. Hopefully, you will nevertheless be willing to contribute again - we're looking forward to it.

Regards,
The Coppermine Dev Team.

I'd like to do the Russian again.  Looked at //cpg1.4 changes in English, it would be 10-14 days or so due to my own time constraints. Unless someone wants to do it faster, I don't mind.

it's perfectly OK that you need some time, we realize that this can't be done fast, as it's a lot of work. I'm looking forward to your contribution no matter when.

I would do the german translation, but I've got one problem:

I followed the 5 steps posted by gau gau, but when I do any change in the english file and save it e.g. as anotherfile.php and select it from my admin menu for testing -> the next time I open my coppermine-admin-menu all entrys and config-topics aren't listed any more. Then I can only do a reset to defaults.... ???

Any idea? (I know there's no support for 1.4.x beta, but a german translation would be nice and I already started...

You don't have to set the entire language to german - for testing purposes, it's enough to set your individual language to german (or whatever) - just add &lang=yourlanguage to the url. If a language file is named "foobar.php" and your coppermine gallery is located at http://mysite.tld/coppermine/, then just type into the address bar http://mysite.tld/coppermine/?lang=foobar. To reset the language to the default, just use a name of a language that doesn't exist, e.g. http://mysite.tld/coppermine/?lang=doesnt_exist
The language preference is stored in a cookie. Take a look at the demo and play with the language selectors - you'll notice that all it does is add something to the url in the address bar.
However: I have already started the german translation, it will be released soon.

This is the feedback from the email I sent to the translators:
  • Mits agreed to do Japanese,
  • s55hh agreed to do Slovenian,
  • Adi Stan is doing Romanian,
  • Kaspars is planning to do Latvian,
  • johnwr is busy translating Norwegian,
  • ClairObscur will re-do Dutch (due to many errors in the other contrib),
  • Owen has agreed to do Welsh
Boy, this is very good news. I'm really looking forward to your contributions.
