i searched through 2 pages and couldnt find this question, but if it's been asked before,... sorry. =/

is there a way to change the thumbnail that's automatically displayed next to albums?

Yes, click on the albums 'properties' button, and change the thumbnail for the album there.
Default is set to last uploaded.
