I inherited a coppermine gallery. The readme file says it's ver 1.5.12. The old admins are long gone.

I migrated the database and files to my own server, updated the config, and the gallery seems to load. I have two questions please:

1) I need to add an admin user for myself. Can I do this with phpmyadmin?
2) I'd like to update to newest version. Best way to do this?

There are plenty of threads for recovering from a lost admin password.

Upgrading is your challenge here. You will need to upgrade to 1.5.48 first as you cannot jump straight to 1.6.x. The first step should be straight forward if you follow the upgrade instructions in the docs. Remember to run /update.PHP after the upgrade in fact, as you have moved server it is a good idea to tun that before the upgrade too if you have not done so already.

Next is the upgrade to 1.6.x. This is also outlined in the docs and in most cases is quite simple using the installer stub. However, you need to be sure your plugins and theme are compatible versions. I suggest removing all plugins before the upgrade then when done install the latest version of those.
