Only placeholders shown for menu items

I upgraded from Coppermine 1.5.16 to 1.5.20 and since then the images for menu items and also the custom header and so on are not being displayed anymore just the placeholder is shown. Strangly, even after I played back the old files from the backup it still does not work properly. However the album images are shown in correct form and order.

Seems that all images are corrupted. Make sure to upload non-text files in binary mode.
