Extract album visits from cookie

Ok - I have no experience dealing with cookies so far.

How do I get and extract album visits from the coppermine cookie?   I will also need to be able to update and resend an updated cookie with new album visits.

(I'm still trying to find a solution to my album hit counts problem mentioned in a thread below)
