I want to create a category where I can show the latest additions, but I want the album to remain in the owners gallery. Is it possible to do this?

There's a meta album 'lastup' that shows you the latest additions of the gallery. Are you searching for this?

I don't want to show thumbnails of the latest pictures, as lastup does, but what I want is a link to newly added user albums.

Maybe the meta album 'lastalb' is what you're looking for? It will list all albums sorted by latest file additions. If this still doesn't match you needs, please explain what you expect more detailed (e.g. what's a "user album" for you?).
