I cannot find a query that identifies which version is installed or if updates are available.

Please clarify or point me to the documentation.

OK, thanks pointing out where to find out what version is installed.

I have 1.5.12 installed, and now must REPLACE it with 1.5.16
This is a huge amount of work over a number of sites.

Why is there no automated or semi automated upgrade facility available?

It is not that complicated nor too time consuming. A few minutes with ftp and then browsing to update.php really does not take long.

We have discussed a few upgrade methods in the past but so far have not developed the ideas too far for various reasons.
