The docs explain a lot - http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/bridging.htm

All the bridge does is allow a single place for a user to register and logon. Most users do not want to register on the same site twice, once to post in a forum and once to upload images. If they have to do that they may just not bother and find an alternative site.

I used to have a setup with CPG and PHPbb bridged but no longer do. It does work and works well. IIRC there was a redirection modification that was usefull on the PHPbb end but it has been a year or two since I used that setup so I cannot comment on its current status..

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
