Changing the amount of characters are allowed in the description?

I just recently upgraded to v1.5.8 from v1.4.18.  I had descriptions that were quite wordy with my older photos, now with the new version, it cuts off after 506 characters.   Does anyone know how I can get it to allow me to add more characters or is this something that is hard wired and cannot be changed?
