GD can't handle true color, see http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/faq.php?q=GD1vsGD2#GD1vsGD2
If GD1 used to work fine and you experience strange colors on your thumbnails only lately, then your webhost has probably upgraded GD to version 2 (refer to the faq as well on how to find out which version of GD you actually have on your server). If your GD version has been upgraded to version 2, you'll have to change this setting in coppermine config as well (there's no auto-detect). The "distorted" thumbs won't be affected by the change in the config, you'll have to rebuild them. Since you're running the old coppermine mod for yabbse there's no utility in your version that will do the conversion automatically for you...

I contacted my host last night...no changes

this is their response

Dear David,

Thank you very much for your mail dated May 17, 2004

We support GD 1.6.2 and do not support imagemajick.

Are you suggesting I am stuck with these qualities unless My Host upgrades?

basically, yes :-X.
In standalone coppermine, there's a setting in coppermine config that let's you change the jpeg compression (and by this the quality up to a certain extent), but I don't know if this works the same way in Spaceman Spiff's Coppermine mod.

just for the record: Spaceman Spiff is the guy who did the initial port of coppermine into the YaBB SE mod, which later went into the SuperMod. The coppermine code that went into the port is somewhat outdated, the mod itself has been abandoned afaik.
If you're considering to upgrade from YaBB SE to SMF, you should make up your mind on getting coppermine standalone (with bbs integration).
