Can "lasthits" NOT be recorded for a user's own images?
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:18:33 am »

I am running "last6" (similar to "lasthits" but limited to previous 6 hours) on my web site http://www.potd.com.au/gallery

I noticed that as an administrator my views are not recorded (which is great), but that got me wondering if would be possible to do the same when a user views their own images?

This would stop unscrupulous users from hijacking the "Images viewed in the last 6 hours" thumbnail display at the top of my gallery.

Cheers

That's a very good question that deserves a detailed answer.
The function that counts of the hot counter is add_hit - it is being defined in include/functions.inc.php, but that hardly matters: instead, you need to figure out where that function is being called: this happens each time a pic is being displayed using the function theme_html_picture().
This being said, you need to edit themes/yourtheme/theme.php and find that function definition. If it does not exist in your custom theme, copy
Code: [Select]
function theme_html_picture()
{
    global $CONFIG, $CURRENT_PIC_DATA, $CURRENT_ALBUM_DATA, $USER;
    global $album, $comment_date_fmt, $template_display_media;
    global $lang_display_image_php, $lang_picinfo;

    $pid = $CURRENT_PIC_DATA['pid'];
    $pic_title = '';

    if (!isset($USER['liv']) || !is_array($USER['liv'])) {
        $USER['liv'] = array();
    }
    // Add 1 to hit counter
    if (!USER_IS_ADMIN && !in_array($pid, $USER['liv']) && isset($_COOKIE[$CONFIG['cookie_name'] . '_data'])) {
        add_hit($pid);
        if (count($USER['liv']) > 4) array_shift($USER['liv']);
        array_push($USER['liv'], $pid);

}
from themes/sample/theme.php into a new line of it's own right before
Code: [Select]
?>in the file themes/yourtheme/theme.php, then edit as suggested below.

The code snippet we need to take care of is
Code: [Select]
    // Add 1 to hit counter
    if (!USER_IS_ADMIN && !in_array($pid, $USER['liv']) && isset($_COOKIE[$CONFIG['cookie_name'] . '_data'])) {
        add_hit($pid);
        if (count($USER['liv']) > 4) array_shift($USER['liv']);
        array_push($USER['liv'], $pid);
    }
Take a look at the conditions inside the bracket of the IF-clause: the additional condition we need to create is a comparison between the ID of the visitor of the page (USER_ID) and the owner ID of the image ($CURRENT_PIC_DATA['owner_id']) the visitor is looking at.
This being said, the comparison needs to be
Code: [Select]
USER_ID!= $CURRENT_PIC_DATA['owner_id']The full line of code you need to change: find
Code: [Select]
    if (!USER_IS_ADMIN && !in_array($pid, $USER['liv']) && isset($_COOKIE[$CONFIG['cookie_name'] . '_data'])) {and replace with
Code: [Select]
    if (!USER_IS_ADMIN && !in_array($pid, $USER['liv']) && isset($_COOKIE[$CONFIG['cookie_name'] . '_data']) && USER_ID!= $CURRENT_PIC_DATA['owner_id']) {
However, this will not stand the attack of a malevolent user who knows his way around if you allow guests to browse your images: the attacker could create a little script that will accept the cookie that coppermine throws (which is something that search engine spiders don't do) and thus would match the conditions (not being an admin, allowing cookies and not being the pic owner), so the hit counter would increase. The script would then delete the cookie and re-visit the page. The page would not be aware that it's a returning visitor, but would think that it's a first-time visitor and thus increase the counter once again. This could be repeated several times. Therefor, you can not use this mechanism for actual competitions if there are coders among your site's visitors who could come up with such a script. You could as well enable detailed stats in coppermine's config (with a performance penalty as a result), which will allow you to track such script attacks. The only permanent solution would be to disallow guest to access the intermediate images, which is of course not nice in terms of hits at all.

As this is a theming question I'm moving this thread accordingly.

Thank you very much for the quick response and detailed reply.

Being a newbie, I will take some time to read and digest that fully.  ;-)

Thanks again.
