Comment spam filtering
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:56:47 pm »

I would like if there was an option to specify words that would be recognised as spam, so that comment wouldn't be posted, and maybe possible to ban IP for a while if these words was in the comment.
I have a lot of problems with spam in my comments even with 5 letters to validate, but I allow guests to comment, and I don't have registered users.

Having a few banned words and ip addresses just doesn't really work. There are already plugins and mods that allow you to do just that. You could even add those words in the language file and enable filter bad words in the config settings. But as I said, it really is a waste of time. There are hundreds of ways to spell Viagra.

Better to use the capcha plugin and/or askimet.

I am already using Capcha plugin, this helped, but still getting a lot of spam, but most of the spam comments have the same words. And I got this idea from a mailserver I am administrating, and I have approx 30 word rules for subject, and this is stopping most of the spam.
I think Askimet could be to much for some users, so the option for specifying own words wold help a lot in many galleries I guess.

The user doesn't notice if Akismet is being used or not. In fact, Akismet is a more advanced blacklist that always is up to date, unlike your proposed method, which will become outdated soon. You really should look into Akismet in detail.
Not a valid feature request thread though. There's no support on the feature requests board.

As spam filtering becomes more sophisticated, spammers have to send even more
spam ..... rapid posting of repeated comments much more difficult than before,

Your remark looks like comment spam to me as well - in which aspect is there a benefit or a valid feature request in your posting? You don't appear to be from Aruba, but from Bangladesh. Locking.
