Post absolute URLs, not relative ones. I get "No image to display" when trying to access http://www.balcombevillage.co.uk/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=1, which is not surprising when browsing the meta-album "search" and not specifying a search term.
Absolute URL for http://www.balcombevillage.co.uk/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=4 would be http://balcombevillage.co.uk/coppermine/displayimage.php?pos=-5

Do as I suggested. http://balcombevillage.co.uk/coppermine/displayimage.php?pos=-5 works as expected, the full-size pop-up works.

I think it's down to the file size after all. The smaller the file, the smaller the enlarged view.

Certainly: the full-size pop-up displays the pic in the resolution it was orgininally uploaded. If the original is only slightly bigger than the dimensions for the intermediate, you'll get just that: a slightly bigger pic. Coppermine doesn't enlarge the orginal.
