[Solved] Thumbnails created small size but huge file
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:30:37 pm »

Hi

I am running the the latest version (as of today), on Win2K with ImageMagick.

Everything is running 100%, but I have now noticed that if I add bulk files via FTP the thumbnail creation process somewhat fails.

It takes a large file and creates a thumbnail from it, the thumbnail's pixel is correct, but the physical file size is still over 100k, so ending with albums full of 140k thumbnail images.

How can I fix this?

Look at
http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery/thumbnails.php?album=8

Most thumbs are huge,

Then if you look at
http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery/thumbnails.php?album=4
They are small like they should be.

Can it be that I interrupted the thumbnail creation process and press insert to quickly?

I get

when trying to access the link you posted.
Make sure you haven't set quality settings to 100% in coppermine config - the thumbs can easily get bigger than the originals if you switch jpeg compression off.

Thumbs
« Reply #5 on: April 13, 2004, 07:29:50 am »

I have deleted the thumbs now and ran the admin util, it is taking a 800k file and creating a 140k thumbnail from it, so I guess I have to play with the settings.

I have now tried it with quality set right down to 50, and the thumbnail and normal image is almost of the size physical file size.

The link above should work fine.

I don't get the point - taking http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery/displayimage.php?pos=-125 as an example, the original pic has 640 x 480 with 63 kB, the intermediate has 533 x 400 with 53 kB, the thumb has 133 x 100 with 9.3 kB. This is perfectly OK imo.

P.S. the "link to ecard" in coppermine config should be
Code: [Select]
http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery (without trailing slash), not
Code: [Select]
http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery/index.php

Your link above, http://www.crosstrax.co.za/tripgallery/thumbnails.php?album=8, works ok for me, and the thumbs are very big, 140k as you said.

Did you use the re-size utility to re-make the thumbs after changing your compression settings back down.  The thumbs won't be changed until you do that.

Yes I changed the res down, ran the admin tool to resize the thumbs, when that did'nt make a difference I deleted the thumbs and the normal images and re-ran the admin tool.

The only difference in creating the albums is that when I created the one called Vleesbaai I did not wait for the preview thumbs but hit insert immediately, and when I created the Maitland Mines one I waited for the preview ones first.

I will delete the pics now and re-insert using the bulk add tool, but will wait for the previews to load to see if that makes a difference.

deleting the thumbs shouldn't be necessary, just use the resize tool as casper suggested. Make sure you have selected the correct album for the resize tool to run through.

Busy doing it now, created a new album and copied the pics back in, thumbs are still 140k odd, so the normal and the thumb image is virtually the same size. Original image about 800k, not sure why it is working on some and not other albums though.

Please post a screenshot of your coppermine config (the relevant part being "Pictures and thumbnails settings").

Here is a capture.

It still puzzles me why some galleries resized fine and others not. I am also having a problem with the upload feature but will tackle that later.

I think this is somehow caused by the camera.  I have looked around your site, and all the large thumbs are ones taken with the Hewlett Packard camera, with filenames starting 'HPIM'.  The thumbs taken with your Sony camera are fine.
So I think it has to do with the jpeg system used by HP.  Try batch converting them and saving them with an image software, and see what happens then.

Okay I will batch convert them with ACDC and create a new test gallery. The camera is a HP Photosmart 850, but I have a personal gallery with Fotki and there it works fine.

Maybe I must also try and manually create thumbnails using ImageMagick from the command line.

It seems that you have a point, I have converted a couple of images using AcDC, same result though in huge thumbnails.

Also uploaded 2 pics taken with my Panasonic LC-33, for these 2 the thumbnails are about 11k each so is acceptable.

I will have to play around a bit more with the converting of HPIM images will post here if I find out anything else.

Thanks for you help!

Glad it's sorted.  Sometimes IM has problems with some jpeg formats.

I thought I'd check this out, so I used google to search for images with the name HPIM, and guess what.
The same thing was happening to googles thumbs for many of the images with this file name.  So I guess it is to do with HP's file saving setup.
