I'm tryinng to put my mini thumb at the category lead, but I don't have an album inside, only at the subcategory. Is possible to put the minithumb there without putting any albums in the lead category?

This is not related to minithumbs but is a general behaviour of coppermine and is covered in the docs

You can only assign a picture to the category only if you have an album with images nested directly within it.

So in short words... no!
