16:9 WMV showing as 4:3 in CPG; okay locally in WinXP
« on: December 22, 2006, 12:54:06 am »

Hi,

I encoded a 16:9 (widescreen) home video in Pinnacle Studio+ 10.7 as a WMV file.

I can play it back just fine on my PC; however the same file, when uploaded and added to my CPG (Coppermine) website, shows as standard 4:3.  This means my kids look really, really thin! :-)

The properties of the files state the ratio is 1.77:1 (i.e. 16:9).

I have WinXP SP2 and Windows Media Player v11.0.5721.5145.

Here it is on my website: http://photos.reeves-hall.net/displayimage.php?album=58&pos=1

Thanks in advance for any help;  And Merry Christmas,

~Andrew~

...just to clarify: the problem is when looking at the video in the album (i.e. play it in the thumbnail).  If I double-click on the video it enters full-screen mode and the video ratio is set correctly to 16:9.

If you haven't specified the actual width and height of a video, it will default to a 4:3 aspect ratio. After having uploaded a video, edit the file's properties and enter the actual resolution - see http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#edit_vids

That did it.  I did search the docs for "16:9" and came up with nothing...

Sure would be nice if (a future version of) Coppermine did the work though (reading the file to know its size)! :-)

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas.

Coppermine won't be able to do that, because the ImageLibraries it uses (GD or ImageMagick) can't read videos.

One more follow-up.  I 16:9 video that I did recently and saved as WMV showed in its properties that it was 640x480.  However, to get it to show in widescreen (16:9) I had to tell Coppermine that its resolution was 853x480.

Equation is: x/480 = 16/9; rearrange to get x = 16/9*480; solve x = 853.

(Change the "480" to whatever the second value is shown by the file properties; eg. if instead of 640x480 it is 1024x768 then use x/768=16/9)
