1.4.1 > 1.4.12 - now cannot accept new photos, all troubleshooting steps implmt

Hi there, I have just upgraded my script to the latest version and all of a sudden the installation won't accept new pictures. the error message is:

"Unable to create thumbnail or reduced size image" when trying to batch add after an FTP upload.

Note, the thumbnail previews usually shown when selecting what pics to insert don't display.

debug:
http://album.wajsbrem.com/error.htm

I also have tried uploading from within the interface and the same error occurs.
I have also 755ed all files in the root directory, that had been 644 after the patch upgrade.

I have setup a user account to recreate the message:
http://album.wajsbrem.com/login.php
u: test
p: test

upload into "Mount Buller August."

Also, as admin I cannot upload into any other Categories

All steps required for forums support re debug mode and groups setting have been instituted.

I am running a 'vanilla' installation.

Make sure you have GD2 selected as resize method in config. Admin approval should be disabled for testing.
