FTP and Coopermine
« on: January 25, 2007, 05:56:34 am »

I'm installing CPG on my server for family use.  My son was concerned with the use of FTP and security of the server.  What hints can you give me on making the server safer from the "attackers"?

You didn't specify what the operating system is on your server but just the same, here's a link that gives "hints" as to hardening a FTP server - http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=40577.0. Another hint, this was the second hit of a Google search.

Did you read the manual first???? Taking 2 minutes to backup your files can save you hours of wondering what you screwed up.

Don't give the attackers an FTP account. Keep Coppermine (and everything else on the server) up to date.

Sorry, it was a late night (again).  ;)

I'm installing it on Fedora 6 Linux and the pics will have their own partition.

Gizmo, your link is to my post. :o

Sounds like you are self hosting (not recommended). If you have direct access to the machine you don't even need FTP running in the first place.

Yes, I'm hosting it, but some of my kids are in the Twin Cities and others are out of state/country.  Why do say "not recomended"?  ???

Nibbler, forgive my lack of knowledge in this realm, can you upload/download to a static ip machine using CPG with something other than FTP?

If you mean for batch adding purposes then you can use any method available to get the files onto the server. FTP is just the most common, but you could use SFTP or SCP. If you don't need to batch add then the HTTP, URL and XP publisher methods will work just fine.
