There were several threads, all dealing with logo and design. To keep a better overview I merged them all together in this single thread...

as there were questions what text should appear on the banners we discussed this in the dev board and decided that for the moment it should be:

PNG & another image size

Here the same images in PNG format, supposedly 'transparent'. Depending on the background they will appear transparent. True tranparency can only be achieved in GIF format but then the images lose a lot as most colors are stripped out. I can make them with white, black and Coppermine blue backgrounds.

You're using Internet Explorer aren't you?

There is a DirectX filter built into MSIE that allows TRUE alpha transparency in PNG's.  I'm using it on one of my subdomains as of this post.  There's a DHTML/CSS script to make it for all alpha transparent PNG's. http://www.webfx.nu/dhtml/pngbehavior/pngbehavior.html

-----------------------------------------------
I also want to propose another logo size: 200x40 px.  I've seen a lot of artist sites use this format for their links and though I'd suggest it.

Jeremy,

what happened to your logo? As this topic has somehow "cooled down" I was trying to do a favicon based on your logo, only to find you removed it. Could you repost it or send me the file?

Thanks

Here's a more copper look with goldish background.

Now someone put a picture or camera on the right, cos i don't have those transparently.

@Jeremy I think you were doing things in a very straightforward and "correct: way and you got beat up over it...  so you took your ball and went home (which I must say I can't blame you).  I hope you'll get back in the mix.  Come back and play... it's playground rules out here and if you're going to worry about someone not calling their own fouls, you're never gonna get any court time.

OK, I know these aren't really ready for prime-time, but I wanted to see if anyone thought this was a direction worth pursuing before I put more time into it.

The idea is that the logotype is actually stamped into a sheet of copper, or an inset put into a metal bar.

Let me know if I should play more with these ... or if I should just scrap the direction. I'm accustoimed to harsh criticism, so don't worry about sparing my feelings :)

I like the second one, although the small text isn't readible that good - maybe if you keep the small text neither inset nor outset? The copper/gold looks fine to me...

hmm, I'm not an graphics artist, so I don't know if this works when made smaller, but how about using a pic of an actual mine as logo (just food for thoughts)? A quick search on google returned:

Actual mines? okay using one of the pictures you posted...

however these are fairly basic, and made in about 1 minute on a flat panel so theyre probably darker than what I am looking at now. These are my contribution though.

I would suggest rounded corners (easy take 4 seconds) and saving it as a gif with a lossy of 10 or so, you can probably shave this file down to about 11k and not notice quality loss (in its present state)

OK. I've tried taking some of John's suggestions. I also really like the "openness" of the existing logo, which was sorely lacking in my previous attempts.

So here's my most recent efforts:
