Secure Passwords (Not Plaintext)

This would seem to be a very important security concern - storing passwords in plaintext is not a very good idea.

If you could implement something like MD5 pass encryption I'm sure many people would appreciate it.

I could probably stick this in the code myself but I don't want to go altering the code as it might give me more problems down the line with upgrading and patching.

from time to time the mySQL-server of our host sourceforge.net experiences downs: just try accessing it agin (hit refresh in your browser if you get the error your mentioned).

Not only would I like to store them securely but I would also like to have an SSL login (i have an ssl cert) 

anyidea?
