thumb_ -s lost their quality ??!!??!!??
« on: January 15, 2004, 11:58:55 pm »

Hi,
I just noticed that my thumb_ pictures look really ugly, they lost their quality... I don't know why... they where find before... but now, when I open my albums, the thumb_-s look really bad :(

Why is that? and how can I fix it back to normal?

Thanks

You have either accidentally switched to GD1, or you have set the compression level too high.  A level between 65 and 85 is appropriate.

I just checked, it's still on GD2 ... and I didn't really change anything, I don't even know where to change that compression level.. .is it in Config ???

I also have installed ImageMagic, but when I choose to use that, it looks like it cant find it or something. it doesnt work, so i was using GD2.

Yes, the compression level is in the config panel.  It will be called something like thumbnail quality, and it can be set from 0 to 100.  Coppermine's default is 80.

Please note this will not change the appearance of thumbnails that have already been created.  You will need to use the batch tool to do that.

Ok, in config, these are only 2 places where i see anything to set for thumbs.

So which one is it?

If that's the quality of JPEG files one, I've changed it couple of days ago to 90, and it was fine, and i haven't touched it after that... so it's probably not it...

one more q.

what will happend if I delete all thumbs , and try to upload the same pics to the same album, will it create new thumbs ?

becuase it might be possible, that somehow it lost it's quality, and it wont be able to get it back untill i reacreate new thumbs...

am I right? or it doesn't work like that?

90 is sufficient. (Too much, if you ask me.   )

You can delete the images, or you can use the batch resize tool to recreate the thumbnails as you desire.

The batch tool deletes the old thumbnails and recreates them from the original images.

Forget the thumbnail question!  All your ugly pictures are in bitmap!    :o

Did you change the code to allow bitmap conversion with GD? This could explain the horribly blocky thumbs.

no i didn't... why is it bitmap?

they're not bitmap... it says jpg  :?

I'll try to recreate... I just did it for 1 album, looks like it does ok, it fixes them..

but anyway, i still have no idea what made them change..

Thank you..

Ok, another problem.

I was trying to fix it by redoing them from ResizePictures option, but it does only 45 pics per click, by default, if I set it to more, it gets an timeout error..

but what if I have more then 45 pics in album? i tryed to do it twice, but it does the same thing for the same pics(first 45) everytime i do it...

:(

isn't there an option to do it to all albums? or just album by album
?

Re: Bitmap

 No, they're not.

IE 6, in beta for the third year now . . .

Good to hear the batch tool fixed the problem for the most part.
