 will coppermine be able to handle thousands of images with probably hundreds of albums?
What about https login?

Yes, but the real limit is your server. I don't know about https login, I dont have access to a server with SSL.

My personal gallery currently contains "12299 files in 283 albums and 29 categories" and runs flawlessly. We consider a gallery of that size a medium/intermediate sized gallery, there are much larger galleries. Check out the thread Share your galleries and the subsequent links posted in that thread to get an idea how well Coppermine performs.
