I just updated from 1.3.2 to 1.4.3 and I went through the theme upgrade guide and right now I am on step 9 of edit theme.php and I got this error after doing step 9. 
This is very frustrating to me because I do not know php or really what the hell the tutorial/walkthrough is talking about. I am just following the steps and hoping it works out.
