it happened after I upgraded to the newer 1.2 and used XP publisher to add images to a new album

Take a look at the stickies, and if you can't be bothered, download the latest version and overwrite the files.

I do have the latest and greatest version of Coppermine
XP is renameing just fine so its a diffrent error from the sticky

By the way, which version do you mean by "latest"?
