What is SSI?

First, I'm am seriously sorry if i posted in the wrong section.  I get confused alot and, i'm sorta need help.  I know i'm a newbie and everything but I hope to have a few questions.

What is ssi?

And i have 1.42 CPG and i'm trying to install http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=8578.0 but it doesn't to seem to work.

Again, i'm sorry if i posted in the wrong section or asked pointless questions.  I hopw someone could answer my questions :)  Thanks.
