[Help wanted]: translations for coppermine 1.2.0
« on: October 02, 2003, 09:21:47 pm »

We're reaching a final phase on our way to the release of CPG 1.2.0 RC1!
For this release we're looking for people who are willing to contribute translations. The original translators of the language files of CPG1.1.0 have been contacted and asked to provide a translation; if you're one of them, you could just grab this text and do a translation on it - it contains everything that has been changed from version 1.1.0 to the current version.
Code: [Select]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So far, Coppermine has been translated into:
Arabic (العربية), Bosnian (Bosanski), Bulgarian (Български), Chinese Big 5 (台灣), Chinese GB2312 (中国), Czech (Česky), Danish (Dansk), Dutch (Nederlands), English (English), Estonian (Eesti), Finnish (Suomea), French (Francais), German (Deutsch), Greek (Ελληνικά), Hebrew (עברית), Hungarian (Magyarul), Italian (Italiano), Japanese (日本語), Korean, Latvian , Norwegian (Norsk), Polish (Polski), Portuguese (Português), Portuguese (Brazilian) (Português (Brazil)), Russian (Русский), Slovenian (Slovensko), Spanish (Español -Castelano), Swedish (Svenska), Thai (ไทย) and Turkish (Türkce).[/size]

Why is your language not among them? It's easy to do a translation (no coding skills needed) - there's a separate language file for each language with just text (more or less) in it.
There are hundreds of languages; I've just picked a list from somewhere on the web - those that I find particularly interessting (because there are a lot of people speaking it; no rating!) are marked bold, but all translations are welcome:
[size=9]Aboriginal Languages, African Languages, Afrikaans, Akha, Akkadian, Albanian (Shqip), Aragonese, Arberisht, Armenian, Assyrian, Asturian (Asturianu), Aymara, Bahasa Malaysia, Basque, Belarussian, Bengali, Berber, Bikol, Bisaya, Brahui, Breton, Burmese, Buruskaski, Catalan (Català), Cebuano, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chinook, Coptic, Cornish, Croatian (Hrvatski), Cymraeg (Welsh), Dakota, Dalekarlian, Dari, Dolomitic Ladinian, Eaiea, Egyptian, Esperanto, Farsi, Filipino, Frisian, Gaelic (Scottish), Galician (Galego), Georgian, Guarani, Gujarati, Gypsy, Hakka, Hawaiian, Hindi, Hmong, Icelandic (Íslenska), Ido, Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia), Inuktitut, Irish, Jakelimotu, Jerriais, Kamilaroi, Kannada, Kazakh, Kerala/Malayalam, Khakas, Khowar, Klingon, Konkani, Kreyol, Kurdish (Kurdi), Lakhota, Lao, Latin, Lithuanian (Lietuviu), Loglan, Lojban, Luganda, Macedonian, Maltese, Mandinka, Manx, Maori, Marathi, Mayan, Mingo, Mon, Mongolian, Montenegrin, Myanmar, Native American Languages, Neelan, Nepali, Nordic, Occitan, Ojibwe, Oneida, Papiamentu, Pashtu, Patois, Paulic, Persian, Pidgin, Punjabi, Quechua, Romani, Romanian (Româneste) [No-Diacritics/fara-diacritice], Romanova, Romansch, Sami, Northern, Sanskrit, Sardinian, Saxon, Scanian, Serbian [Cyrillic/Srpski], Sesotho, Sinhala, Slovakian (Slovenská), Somali, Spanish [Latin America/Argentina, Sranan, Sudovian, Swabian, Swahili, Swiss, Tagalog, Talossan, Tamil, Tatar, Tceqli, Theloskrit, Tibetan, Tongan, Turkmen, Uighur (Uyghurche), Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Volapuk, Walloon, Wolof, Yi, Yiddish, Yiklamu, Yugoslav, Zarma.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is how you do a translation:
  • Download the most recent english language file
  • Unzip it to your hard drive
  • Open it with your favorite text editor (notepad will be fine) - do not use a WYSIWYG-editor like MS frontpage (it'll most likely ruin the file) and take a quick look at the file first...
  • If you decide to actually do the translation, please post on this thread something like "I'm working on a Klingon language file" to avoid different people doing a translation for the same language!
  • At the very start of the language file, there are some fields to fill out containing information about your language (for example the name of your language not in english, but IN your language) and about you (the translator) - replace the example text with yours
  • The actual translation: you'll notice that there are variables/array definitions inside:
    • on the left, there's the name of the var - don't change this
    • on the right, there's the english translation - overwrite it with your translation
    • some lines may have additional comments (with leading slashes) that will explain what the translation is used for - don't modify it[/list:u]example: this part of the english lanuage file:
      Code: [Select]
'title_a' => 'Title ascending', // used for sorting the thumbnails
'title_d' => 'Title descending', // used for sorting the thumbnails
would become in a German translation:
      Code: [Select]
'title_a' => 'Titel aufsteigend', // used for sorting the thumbs
'title_d' => 'Titel absteigend', // used for sorting the thumbs
    • Things to look out for:
      • Single quotes (apostrophes) need to have a backslash in front of them, e.g. if you want the output to be "You don't have permission to access this page." you'll have to write
        Code: [Select]
'access_denied' => 'You don\'t have permission to access this page.',(This is called "escaping" in PHP)
      • letters immediately after a percent-sign ("%") must be left alone - they will later be replaced by numbers or text when the script is being run.

      Example:
      Code: [Select]
      'album_on_page' => '%d albums on %d page(s)'would become
      Code: [Select]
      'album_on_page' => '%d Alben auf %d Seite(n)'in German.[/list:u]
    • Save your file with the english name of your language (e.g. "german.php" or "klingon.php")
    • If you can: test-drive your language file on your installation of coppermine. Watch out especially for the JavaScript alert boxes - they can be tricky...
    • Once you're done, zip the file and provide any means so that we can get the file (e.g. put it up on your site for download (remember to let us know it's there) or attach it to a pm (to a member of the dev team) on the support board[/list:u]GauGau

P.S. as a little "reward" (well, sort of) the translators will be tagged with the rank "Translator" in their profile...

@migon: you were supposed to:
a) send me the stuff that has been changed
or
b) translate the whole file anew

Putting the stuff that has changed right at the beginning of a full translation won't do any good - this is not the way a language file works, the changes have to be inserted at the correct place!

As I can't make heads or tails out of the other files you added I dropped them.

I'll also drop

Thanks for the chance.
I have two questions:
1. Is 1.2 lang file backward compatible with 1.1D? Here are variable diff:
- Line 926 says user_active while in 1.1D it says user_active_cp!
- Line 931 says user_location while in 1.1D it says user_from
- Line 933 says user_occupation while in 1.1D it says user_occ
these are the only variable changes I saw.

2. Is the phpNuke version of the lang file and the standalone version the same?

Haven't looked into it in detail, but I think the phpnuke and the standalone language files are different (this is probably necessary for cpg-for-phpnuke to comply with the phpnuke-standards).
This means a language file for CPG 1.2.0 (standalone) will be backward compatible (that is: can be used with) to CPG 1.1.X
Out of the language file for 1.2.0, the phpnuke-heads in the dev team are going to build a phpnuke language file (I don't know about compatibility issues here).
If you want to compare language file versions, I suggest you compare the files of the standalone packages, as they're the "originals" and everything "phpnuke-ish" is a spin-off.

GauGau,

I've already sent you an updated Hebrew translation which includes the new strings.

I would like to suggest that next time when new strings are added, they should be marked (as a php comment) in the English prototype, in order to make them easier to find. Eg. on every new line add something like "// NEW".

Regards,

Eyal.

lykman has sent the (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/gr.gif)Greek version
wormie has added the (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/dk.gif)Danish version
EZ has contributed the (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/il.gif)Hebrew version
(http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/no.gif)Norwegian has been done by Øyvind Nondal
Grumpywolf has done the (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/es.gif)Spanish translation
Ron has commited (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/images/flags/nl.gif)Dutch

@EZ: good point, I'll correct that.

at the moment, the language files are not backward compatible (thanks to Ron for pointing this out), I consider this a bug and will look for a way to fix it.
