what happens to orphan photos?

sometimes photos are uploaded, but not placed in albums.
they might be called orphan photos.

do they all just sit on the server somewhere?
are they deleted?

is there a way to clean/sweep em?

If you don't select an album the files will remain in the edit directory which is cleaned up automatically.
