Gallery (the other one) is killing my site
« on: July 31, 2005, 04:10:38 am »

My site has been going down constantly for the past couple of weeks.  After running tests all over the place I've found that it's Gallery (not Coppermine).  I had it shut down all day and the site worked fine... I turn it back on and the server load goes through the roof and the site goes down.

Question is this: Would Coppermine Gallery be a good replacement for a 5000+ image gallery?  Server load is a big priority for me.  Does Coppermine put more or less load on the server.  Maybe having a database helps?

Thanks for any advice.

both menalto.gallery as well as coppermine need a database afaik. You can't tell what server load both apps create, it depends on your setup. Both apps have settings that use huge resources when turned on (so if you're having trouble with server performance, you should turn those settings off). I can't tell you what settings to turn off for menalto.gallery (I'm no expert for their software). As a rule of thumb: disable all manipulation of pics on the fly. For details on improvement of your menalto.gallery site, ask your question over at the menalto boards.
Bottom line: both apps have their pros and cons. Without knowing your requirements, it's impossible to tell if coppermine would be a better alternative. For a start, post a link to your site.

Gallery 2 uses a database, Gallery 1 uses a flatfile system.

All I can say is that we recently have had Mambo probs, so I got our host to keep an eye on the server loads and they were never high in comparison to other sites on the same server, despite us having a Coppermine Gallery of 8000 + pix.
