On first i used Menalto but Coppermine was better and easier.
Now i'm even a Coppermine for Nuke dev within 4 weeks, could you imagine that ?

It tells something about the simplicity

Here's their feature list I say ours is better. I also test drove "gallery" and coppermine at http://opensourcecms.com/ I like the features and interface of coppermine better. Like DJMaze said the code is easy to understand (relativly) and can modified to your delight...just start with the newest version and make notes/comments, it will make upgrading easier.

Configuration wizard

Gallery comes with a handy web based configuration wizard. This wizard helps to make sure that your web server and operating system are set up correctly. It allows you to configure many of Gallery's options while determining as much as it can from your environment. The wizard will create an admin account for you. This is a special account that allows you to create other user accounts, create albums, and set album permissions.
Administrator

You start off with only one user, the Administrator (login name: admin). This account can do anything with Gallery. Typically you'll want to use the admin to create other users. Users can be granted permission to create and maintain their own albums.
Albums

An album is a unit group of the Gallery. It can contain pictures and movies. It can have specific permissions (ie, some users can modify it, some users can add to it, etc). The album owner is typically the chief maintainer of an album, but the owner can grant those permissions to other Gallery users.
Adding photos to Albums

If you have the appropriate permissions, you can add photos to an album. You can add them one at a time or up to 10 at a time using the "Add Photos" dialog. If your server has ZIP file support, a faster alternative is to upload a ZIP file full of photos and movies. A third option is to specify a web page and let Gallery go and slurp all the photos and movies off of that page for you (it'll let you pick which ones you want). A fourth option[1] is to copy images to your web server and let Gallery copy them directly into your album. As photos and movies are added to the album, Gallery will resize and make thumbnails of them for you.

Gallery also allows you have albums within albums[1] so you can organize sets of albums together. You can choose which album you want to be the highlight, just as if it were a photo. You can move albums and ranges of photos in and out of other albums.
Maintaining photos

A photo or movie is the basic unit of Gallery. Photos and movies are grouped together into albums. Once you have the photos in your album the fun begins. Typically an intermediate resized version and a thumbnail of the image are created for you. You can:

    * Add captions
    * Edit the thumbnail. Gallery comes with a small Java applet that lets you select a part of the image as the source for your thumbnail.
    * Rotate your photo (in 90 degree increments)
    * Highlight a photo (pick a photo to represent the album in the main Gallery)
    * Reorder the photos in the album
    * Hide photos (so that they're only visible to the owner)
    * Delete photos
    * Sort your album[2] based on popularity, title, number of comments, and photo capture date.
    * Edit multiple captions at once[4]

Maintaining Albums

Each album's appearance can be customized by its owner in a variety of ways. You can change the title, colors, background, fonts, and borders. You can also specify a target thumbnail size and a target intermediate photo size (so that folks with lesser bandwidth can view scaled versions of big photos). The number of rows and columns in an album is customizable, as well as a variety of viewer options.
Mirroring Albums [2]

Gallery lets you mirror your albums on as many remote servers as you like. This lets you run your Gallery on a machine with limited bandwidth (like over a DSL line) but still serve up your images quickly from a high bandwidth source like an ISP. Gallery will not actually mirror the files for you. You're responsible for doing it yourself. I use a program called rsync. You can use whatever you want. If the remote album is up to date, Gallery will use it. If not, Gallery will use the local one. Or see: http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Synchronizing%20your%20albums%20with%20a%20mirror%20server
Gallery Remote[3]

Gallery comes with a Java application called Gallery Remote that your users can use to upload photos to your Gallery via a drag-and-drop interface. On the standard file upload page there is a link to the Gallery Remote download page which will download the application from the SourceForge server directly to your user.

Other methods are available to easily add pictures to your Gallery.
Users

A user (provided the admin allows it) can create a new album. This user (the creator of the album) is the album's owner and can modify the album's permissions. You can grant read, write, modify and delete permissions to individual users on a per-album basis. Owners and the Administrator always have all permissions.
Embedding Gallery[1]

Gallery is now compatible with Nuke 5.0+ and Post-Nuke as an add-on module. Simply put your gallery directory inside the Nuke modules directory and you're all set. All the regular Gallery features will work properly while embedded inside Nuke, and Gallery will have the same look and feel as the rest of your Nuke site.
Customizing Gallery

You can change much of Gallery's look with style sheets. You can also wrap it inside your own website in a seamless fashion (example 1, example 2, example 3) using our HTML wrapping system. The one thing you can't easily do right now is to change the layout from a grid format to something else. However, in v2.0 we plan to introduce a templating system that will let you write your own HTML to do customized themes and layouts (or use the ones that we and other users provide). You can find out more about MANY more customizations further down in the user guide underneath the Customization area
Viewer Options

Users viewing your album can easily navigate around using the navigation bars at the top and bottom of every album page. Each album can be given its own unique URL. Each photo within the album in turn has its own unique URL. You can use these URLs to get directly to a specific photo from outside the Gallery (useful when you want to email photo links to a friend). In addition to this, the album owner can allow the user to use the following features:

    * Fit-to-window[1][0]. This feature will scale any photos that don't have intermediate resized versions so that they fit on the screen of the viewer (experimental) This is an optional feature that can be disabled by the Administrator.
    * Full-vs-Resized [1][0]. Viewers can specify that they want to view "only" the full sized versions.
    * Photo printing [1][0]. Gallery is integrated with Shutterfly. Your viewers can order prints via Shutterfly with a single click.
    * Short URLs. If you have the mod_rewrite capability on your webserver (this is a module for Apache, and many ISPs enable it) you can use very short URLs for each picture which makes it easier to email them around.
    * Keyword searching[1][0]. Gallery allows you to search your album and photo names and descriptions for keywords. This is a configurable option.
    * EXIF headers [1][0]. Gallery displays the EXIF data embedded into images by most of the newer digital cameras. This is a configurable option.
    * Click counting[2][0]. Gallery tracks how many times an album or photo has been viewed and displays it for you to see. This is an optional feature that can be disabled by the Administrator.
    * Public commenting[2][0]. Visitors can write their own comments on individual photos for all to see. Admins can manage these comments. This is an optional feature that can be disabled by the Administrator.
    * Slideshow[4]. Visitors can view the contents of an album using a slideshow.

  • ++++++ denotes a feature that is "optional" and can be disabled by the Gallery adminstrator.
  • [1]+++++++ denotes a feature that is available as of Gallery version 1.1
[2]+++ denotes a feature that is available as of Gallery version 1.2
[3] denotes a feature that is available as of Gallery version 1.2.3
[4]+ denotes a feature that is available as of Gallery version 1.3

Gallery Project or CPG?
« Reply #4 on: November 22, 2003, 07:55:48 am »

I'm sorry but that it's a dumb question to ask here as also is a dumb question to ask in Menalto's forums. The answer is obvious =)

Make a list of the features you can't live without, followed by the ones you need but are willing to sacrifice and finally the ones you would like to have but don't really need.
Run CPG and Menalto's Gallery though your list and you'll find which is better for you!

Coppermine is better for two IMPORTANT reasons
« Reply #5 on: December 08, 2003, 09:29:21 am »

Reason #1: I'm a convert from menalto and found that I could only upload as many images as there was memory available to PHP. My web server allocates 64 MB to PHP. Maxed out at about 650 images and refused to accept any more using Gallery Remote. Your web host can increase the memory available but how many of them willingly comply? Especially if you are one of 236 users sharing one machine.

Reason #2: Coppermine runs on mysql - a huge speed advantage.

I used to have Gallery installed on my site, needless to say I'm now using CPG :) Gallery has loads of annoying bugs and isn't quite as visually appealing as CPG. And in terms of installing/management. There is no contest.

I have been using Gallery for a few months now, with few complaints, but I am thinking of switching to Coppermine, since my new hosting company offers it built in to their package.

So far, the only thing I can see that Gallery has over Coppermine is the easy ability for visitors to order prints.  I'm wondering why it hasn't been built into CP yet?

Lypha.com

On the list of pre-installed PHP stuff, they have 4images and Gallery as their image galleries, but after signing up, I found that they actually offer 4images and Coppermine.

Any suggestions on how best to integrate online printing services into Coppermine?  I'm still digging through the forum for more info.

I switched from Gallery to Coppermine also, mostly because Gallery was giving me hell on uploads (and apparently lots of other people).  Coppermine has been great so far.  The only thing that I reallly liked about Gallery was how it carried out slideshows.  You could select the time interval and use different effects for the transitions.  I thought that was pretty cool.  I am looking forward to the next release.

Great job guys.

  <input type=hidden name=imbkprntb-1 value="Hi">
</form>

This is what the form for printing to shutterfly looks like in Gallery - Since I can never really verify that this is going to work I am not very inclinced to add this...

But would be very glad if someone did experiment with it

I'm going with Coppermine. Gallery seems great for small sites such as homepages, but album directory structure and uploading is really not for big sites.

this is quite an old topic, but i'm kicking it nevertheless because i'm using CPG1.3 now and have used/is using gallery too.
I didn't participate on this discussion until now because I wanted to see how the upload-pics-features of CPG1.3 looks like.

If it comes to flexibility and ease of use, coppermine is better. The usage of a database makes this possible. Adding albums and changing descriptions is a breeze. And the looks and feel of coppermine is very flexible too.

Nevertheless, gallery is much better when it comes to organizing and uploading.
In terms of uploading, they have 3 major modes: the most important one, their integrated java-program to upload a batch of pictures from one's computer is very efficient. The second one is a form-based multiple filesuploadmethod, much alike coppermine's. The third one, and my favorite one,is their URL-based upload. Instead of adding the URL of 1 image, you can add the URL of a directory or webpage and a list of all possible uploadcanditates will be shown. Select the images you want and it'll be added to your gallery.

Another good thing of gallery is the way they organize files. Instead of one huge directory and depending on a database to link to the right file, the images are indeed inside folders and when deleted or moved, they physical location will change too. This maintains a very clean directory structure. And it's less mysql-connections of course (gallery use only php)

And finally, the permissionssettings of gallery is much better than coppermine. It's easy to appoint "moderators" to help out with the organizing.

But... i'm using coppermine anyway. mayinly because of the looks, but also because I can use mysql to edit descriptions a lot of images at once. However, it'd be recommendable for the developpers of coppermine to take a look at the competition and learn something from it.

I disagree with Gallery directory structure being better.  I haven't used latest version, but I used it a few months ago and it throws everthing into its own place and renames directories. This is fine for small personal type sites, but for larger ones you need categories and subdirectories.

Gallery IS using subdirectories. You can add an album into an album.

I don't know anything about code, and Menalto Gallery is a pain to get rid of once it is installed, but have you seen the new Java thingy in the latest version of Menalto?  One thing it does, and does well, is displays auto slideshows at full screen resolution.  It is terrific!  That is one feature I wished Coppermine had and one feature I just can't live without.  It is like I've been wandering in an acrid desert, searching for water, and coming across a huge crystal clear spring.  Come on Coppermine!  Catch up!

Rm -rf gallery and its' gone, or do you mean you want to keep the pics? Yes, then you ahve to recursively delete all those dat and lockfiles.

What legitimate reasons could one have for needing this feature? It wouldn't work most of the time anyway. One index file and the entire process collapses.
