Help... I can't upload or get the batch file to work

I created a folder in the album directory (not in the edit or userpics) uploaded the pics using the ftp, and get nothing.  The control panel seems to work fine, except for not displaying any pictures. When I go to the Batch control..it says to select a directory & file, but there is no display to select from.  I tried to indivdually upload and got the following:

File Uploads: 
File Name/URL Error Message
1. soldier1.jpg Impossible to move.
2. soldier2.jpg Impossible to move.
3. soldier3.jpg Impossible to move.
4. soldier4.jpg Impossible to move.
5. soldier5.jpg Impossible to move.

set the permissions (CHMOD) on the newly created folders as suggested in the docs (usually CHMOD 777 or 755)
