I've tried CPG 1.4.1... what are your thoughts ?
« on: May 06, 2005, 09:13:52 pm »

Hi all, - I'm not looking for support, - I'd just like to hear from others who have tested the latest beta release to see if any of this sounds familiar....
Install went fine, - had it up and running in notime.
In "config" it doesn't seem to 'save' all the options I change, - especiallly when trying to change the language
Batch add files won't show any folders, - until I select "Browsable interface NO".

the login part with "remember me ?", - don't know if the cookie dissappears or what happens, - but I need to login 'often', - whereas my 5 other Coppermine albums maintain the login quite constantly...

There is no way I can find anything related to Exif info/manager, - having images in multiple albums was also something I thought was in there.. and the very last, - and maybe biggest thing, - was the availability of the mini-cms system.... unfortunately it bombs out on my system saying "html_entity_decode" not found or similar.... html_entity_decode requires php version 4.3.0+ and I'm not running that.... my system is running a more humble 4.1.2 which I discovered was within requirements for CPG 1.4.1..

The biggest problem is probably that I don't know exactly where the 1.4.1 version 'is' at this point in time, - and if it's because I didn't search the forums enough then you'll have to excuse me, - but for now : if this is the state of things I'll wait for a proper release, - but my initial feeling is that I must be doing something wrong here, - and therefore I hope you'll all say I messed it up and should try again.... :-)

or will upgrading php solve something (obviously the mini-cms part) ?

Kim Igel.

Ahum... seems that I can re-upload images, - selecting different folders, - instead of what I assumed could be possible from within Coppermine.... :-)

and if I switch 'on' the Exif data, - I even get them .... works on both images with and without Exif info... great...! :-)

The batch add browsable interface works fine, just differently.
The photos in multiple albums works fine.
Coppermine 1.4.1 is suitable for the version of php you use, but plug-ins may not be.  The minicms is dependant on other applications for the editing, and these may have different requirements.

The only language that is 1.4 ready is english, the others will not work, as the translations have not been done yet. (the english_gb works correctly, providing lang fallback is turned on).

You've already discovered that the exif does indeed work.

The remember me option does indeed not seem to work at the moment, but this, and the problems with bbs integration are probably all that are holding up the next release.

thanx Casper, - great to know.

batch add browsable interface says "No folders inside Albums".. or something, I can't remember, - and right now when I wanted to check the exact wording - it works.... ?? I am dead-sure it did not work before... have changed a config setting or 40 along the way, - but nothing should relate to this... spooky...
Tried creating a new folder inside Albums, -and it shows up allright, - as supposed....

Photo's in multiple albums... when I "single upload" a file I can do it... CPG even handles that I move an image to another folder where the same photo is allready.. nice:-).... but apparently I can't with "Batch add files".. then I get the "DP icon" error....

Your explaination about languages and plugins answers all the other questions I had. Thankyou.

Multiple photo's in albums would be nice to have with my current 'test-project' with CPG 1.4.1... ( http://teamdba.igel.it )

Is it true I can't do it with "batch add files" ?

The "Browsable interface" thing is dependant on the theme selected.. well obvious now, - but I thought I'd post it if someone else crawls over it... theme Classic will not show Browsable interface, - theme Water_drop e.i. will.... that explains that...

EDIT... not really... now both Classic and Water_drop can do this...  Erm... ???

Are you getting the minicms files from the CVS? If not, try that. If you still have issues, please go to http://cpg-contrib.org/board/

Thanx TransDance. I got it from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cpg-contrib/cpg1.4.1-plugin-minicms-1.3.zip?download, -e.i. the 'package' from 2005-03-06. The CVS is a bit newer, - will try that later.
But are the requirements php > 4.3.0 ?

But are the requirements php > 4.3.0 ?
That's a good question and I don't know the answer. :-[

However, I don't recall discussing minimum requirements for plug-ins and that is a valid discussion to hold. IMO, the plugins should not be held to the same minimal requirements. The point of the plugins is to expand coppermine's capabilities, optionally. If we have to adhere to the low minimum requirements, it would limit what could be done. Additionally, the plugins can be utilizing separate apps with their own requirements.

Are you using a webhost that is running the old php version, kiig? Or is this your own system?

it's my own, a mutated Redhat something from Contribs.org, - a "SME-server", - takes 20 minutes from you format the harddrive until you'll have a webserver, webmail, ftp, multiple domains or whatever you like... very easy :-) (It's actually feeding my Kiss DP-500 Divx DVD player as well...)

My biggest problem is that it's currently the only physical webserver here at home right now, - and it's running 2 or 3 sites right now which needs 'full attention' so I really can't bring it down for more than a little time at night, - or face the risk of a php upgrade going wrong. .:-)

I've got a site for a photographer I know and he's showing images from an event from this weekend, - I'm involved with "Danish Touring car Championship" and have a couple of sites with images, - I'm with the team that Jan Magnussen drives for... .-)  )

I beleave there is an upgrade that upgrades both php, mysql, SSH and whatever else security issues.... so it's an upgrade I need to test thorougly. But I can slam a machine together and try it if it sounds reasonable that a newer php version than 4.1.2 is required.

Any inside info about the "images in multiple albums", - when using the batch upload feature ? Should it work ? (in this current"you're on your own-Beta-no support version" ? :-) I fully understand why the version comes without support, - and I just appreciate the option of trying it out :-)

Regarding the minimal requirements for plugins, - I agree, - the limitations of the core system should not hold the plugin's back - the 'time to market' for a new plugin is shorter so it's much easyer to develop a plugin that requires new feature X, - than having to wait for the core system to be 'upgraded'.... but if there is any requirements, - like PHP >4.30 :-) then it should be somewhere

It's not obvious when you are using more recent functions, they sneak in without you noticing. If you check the entry in the php manual for html_entity_decode there is a workaround function there for users < 4.3.10 - you should be able to drop that in and be working fine.

to use images in multiple albums:
1) assign keywords to those images
2) in the albums that you want the images to appear, enter the keyword(s) in the album properties.

Huh... I think I need to try that before I fully understand... but thanx alot. It would be very usefull for my current project, - as well as MiniCMS... so I'll definitively look into it in a couple of hours.

@Nibbler, - I rarely scroll 'down' on php.net, - but this was very usefull. I just copied the entire function I needed into the troublesome MiniCMS file... and it works... Thanx

Now I just need to play with MiniCms... :-)

Does it have any kind of documentation (did look in the download package :-(  ) ? or do I just play with it ?

I tried it :-) working fine !

It's like a super-album, - showing whatever might be in it, - as well as images with the typed keywords... cool..

Now I'm really glad I tried 1.4.1... :-) I wanted images in multiple albums, - and the miniCMS will help me aswell.

I currently shoot motorsport, - so I'll have 1 album per day with all shots, -and then I can put keywords on the interesting images, - making them appear also in seperate albums for ei. "drivers", "hospitality", - "Drive shots" and so on... I mean... this is really cool.... :-)  ! Thanx all.

I managed to get the latest Mini CMS from the CVS, TranzNDance - thankyou...  now it was another function I needed, - but your suggestion Nibbler worked again. Found another package with the needed function.. somehow the html_entity_decode is no longer used .-)

and now I can delete the 'entries' directly from the GUI... nice... (didn't work from the latest 'package')... but I can see I need to play with it to figure out exactly what does what....

like the different editors, - probably a matter of taste and functionality, - but the 'type'.. and "content" tabs in the editor... I have no idea...

you need to get cpg-contrib MiniCMS support on the cpg-contrib boards.

http://cpg-contrib.org/board/index.php?board=2.0

I'm happy to answer questions and accept feature requests there, but I do not want to start conversations both on Coppermines, and cpg-contrib's boards regarding cpg-contrib projects.

@Kim: if you want to help improve cpg1.4.x, please post only one issue per thread and make sure you have the most recent cvs checkout as suggested here: http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=7947.msg77748#msg77748

Thanx Donnoman for the link to the Mini CMS board.... I'll go there if I need support or have questions, thankyou.

@Gaugau, - I would certainly like to help, - but as long as there's no support or discussion regarding 1.4.1 it's hard to help unless I trawl the developer forums, - and even there I need to 'play' a bit more with the new version before I even can begin to understand what's being discussed :-) I'm planning on being ready to help in the generel forums when it's released....

I'll get the latest CVS (my CVS client is working) and will have a look :-) Unfortunately my current 'project' was to big a success.. it's gone public now, - so I can't fiddle much with it... .-)
But I'll bring up a testsite with the latest CVS and explore... and keep the "one-question-per-thread" style we usually use. Sorry bout that. I was just exited about the possibility of bringing the new 1.4.1 up because my needs where exactlly what I expected from 1.4.1 : images in multiple albums (works great!) and the ability to use MiniCMS on some of my pages, - and that also works great.
