This would be a nice mod imo. In case someone takes the job, would you be willing to "sponsor" it and make it available publicly once it's done?
Just food for thought for someone who'd like to come up with this: once a function or class has been created for square thumbnails it'd be great to have the option both for fresh thumbnails to be created square (using batch-add and/or http uploads) and for existing thumbnails (using admin tools).
