Customized number of categories showed on index

Actually, I'd like to put only the main categories on the homepage because they are many of them. And then on the next page, you get all the sub-categories and sub-sub-categories on the same page.

I don't know if it's clear, and how it could be done concretely...

Log in/admin mode/config/ find ' Number of levels of categories to display', set to '1'

What I want would be actually to put 1 for the homepage and 3 for 1st level categories

not possible at the moment (unless you code it).
