This is a theme request more than a feature request.  It's possible to do this using GD2 and PHP but would be at least a little CPG intensive to do each thumbnail and intermediate image each time, unless you'd want to do it once during the upload of the image.

Don't see this as being considered by the dev team, but someone could always come up with a theme or mod to accomodate you.
