Photo Gallery With / Without Databases
« on: October 12, 2004, 08:33:55 pm »

Just as a general question, what is the advantage/disadvantage of using a Photo Gallery which uses a database (like Coppermine) vs. one that doesn't (like Gallery - gallery.sourceforge.net).  Both of these particular galleries provide similar features and theme-controlled layouts.

Does the number of photos to be placed on-line suggest one in particular?  For what reason.  I'm looking at having upwards of 50,000 images on-line.  I am using both Coppermine and Gallery to get a feel for each.  Having loaded in about 3,000 images, the performance of both is about the same.  Any thoughts?

menalto gallery uses a database as well. The main difference is that coppermine needs GD or ImageMagick, menalto gallery needs ImageMagick or NetPbm. Both apps have strengths and weaknesses or features one app has and the other one doesn't have. Basically a matter of what you need in a gallery imo. Of course it should be obvious what my preferences are... ;)
