I know this is adressed somewhere but I did a search but didn't really find anything.

I just want to add a menu on the left side of my gallery, for links and stuff.

I'm running v1.2 I think.

There is a theme, Fruity, that places the menu on the left side. You can base your template on it, or look at how it was done.

Also, have you tried searching for something like 'menu navigation left'?
