Is it correct, that there is no way to hide albums for unregistered users without giving the registered users the right to have private albums?

Not exactly.

It is true that you have to set 'users can have private albums' to YES in config.

BUT you can also set, in groups, 'can have personal albums' to NO for each group.  So you can set all groups, the ability to have, or not have personal albums.

Note the difference between 'Private' and 'Personal'.

Is it possible to hide everything except the album name from unregistered users?
I mean that they can just see the album name and have to register to see the thumbs and pictures.

Yes, in config, set 'show private thumbnail to unlogged viewer' to YES.

Hmmm ...

I meant that unregistered users can't view the pictures in general. So if a possible new user just can see the album name and that he get an error if he try to view the pictures and that he has to register if he want to see the pictures.

That is what that does, the unregistered user sees the 'private' icon, the name of the album etc, but not the pics.
Also, please search the board, this has been asked many times.

What version are you using, and what language file.

it's inside the section "Files and thumbnails advanced settings". If you can't see it, try temporarily switching to english as language and the classic theme.
If you think it's still not there, please post a screenshot of your config page, around the "Files and thumbnails advanced settings" section.

does this apply to regular catagories or only user personal galleries?
i have thsi turned on and logged off (deleting cookies as well) but as a guest still able to view images.
