When left clicking on intermediate picture, instead of the fullsize picture popping up or spawning a lightbox, perhaps the fullsize picture could replace the intermediate picture. The page would stay the same and it would appear you were looking out of a window, with mouse movements, the fullsize picture would move from behind the 'intermediate window' to reveal the whole picture. Then a right click could allow a download of the fullsize picture as it does now in coppermine.
