Title: What happened to www.chezgreg.net?
Post by: Joachim Müller on September 21, 2003, 08:32:42 am
Hi folks,

we have finally gone "online" with the "new" coppermine support board;

I just wanted to explain why we're here and what this site is about:

What happened to the "original" coppermine website at www.chezgreg.net:
Greg, the author of coppermine, has disappeared. Meanwhile, his webhosting contract has expired, so the site went down. We (some guys interessted in the continuation of the project) have formed a dev team, registered the project at sourceforge.net and are about to continue development on the software.
We have asked the webhost (ovh) of www.chezgreg.net to grant us access to the database, but they can't do that without the consent of Greg, so we have no other choice than to start from scratch and build a new site and community.

We need your help and support for that - please contribute and give us your feedback on the new Coppermine support board we have set up.

This is indeed very sad news. I hope greg comes back in good health... what would be coppermine without his great work!

Hope all of us can help get this thing back on track... no way to get that old forum back huh? it had alots of threads for many issues! Oh well, hope this works.

thanks gaugau. :)

Title: Hosting Help
Post by: chicagousmc on September 27, 2003, 12:27:20 am
Well I would be willing to give him hosting for little or no cost if that would help.  What kind of space and traffic (bandwidth) are we talking about?  I don't want to see coppermine have issues as I fine it to be an excellent script and I use it a lot.

I can be reached at admin@armedforcesconnect.net

I'm from Austria, I would also like to support by donating. So it may be a good idea to use a system that is avaiable worldwide.

*great script*
Title: I can provide hosting
Post by: EZ on September 28, 2003, 07:37:02 am
GauGau and others,

I will soon  (2-3 weeks) upgrade my hosting reseller account to 2GB disk and 24GB bandwidth, most of which I won't use in the forseeable future.

I can provide all the necessary space and bandwidth for Coppermine, as well as access to PHP, MySQL, FTP and all the standard tools on a web hosting service. I'm also willing to delegate full administration privileges to whoever wants to take responsibility for managing the web site.

GauGau you have my email, please contact me if you want me to host Coppermine.

heh.. great offer but it's only a relatively small site.  I can't imagine CPG would require that kind of size unless we get slashdotted or something, which would be remotely possible.

CPG's running off sf.net for now and moving again would be a pain for a lot of people.

However, I could *ahem* think of a few other non-related uses for it though *grin*...

@Mathibus - you probably know soccer: I had to show the yellow card to you on the old board; I show it to you here on the new board. The next card in soccer will be the red one - you know what that means :x !
We all are concerned about Greg, and as stated on many occasions (faq, postings here on this board) we're trying everything to find out. A little more tact would be absolutely required!

What is wrong with Greg's site? Every request throws back a 403; I have sent him an email, but he has not replied yet. Has anyone been able to reach him?

That is unfortunate, but I see that GauGau's FAQs have been transferred to Source Forge. I also see that this question was added to the list, so I apologize for cluttering up the public board. Let us hope Greg is okay.

-----------------------------------------

To whom it may concern:

Someone sent me a private message shortly before the site went down. I got the notification, but I was not able to read the message, so I have no idea who you are. If you feel it was important enough to send again, please use Source Forge to contact me.

------------------------------------------

Would it be possible to contact ovh.net/ovh.com and ask them why the site's permissions have been set to block all users? They might know what happened to Greg.

I would, but I don't speak French. I can only imagine how a Babelfish translated email would read.

[size=18]moorey managed to extend Greg's webhosting contract for one year (hooray!).
This means: soon www.chezgreg.net will go up again, but we have no means (yet) to administer this domain.
We'll inform people there of what happened (with "regular" postings).

As we have no means to administer www.chezgreg.net, please don't post there - only use the support board at chezgreg.net for reference (once it's up)!

:D thanks for the offer, but in fact we never were looking for hosting - we're fine with sourceforge at the moment.
It was only the generous offer of some coppermine supporters that made people think we were short on webspace  , so a lot of people volunteered to host us for free (thanks to all of you!).
If the need should arise, it's good to know that there are people we could ask for help.

Hello Everyone,

I hope Greg is well and shows up soon. I found this board through Hotscripts. I'd been wondering what happened to Chezgreg.com.

I'm not a programmer but I think this is one of the best scripts there is. I run an Arts & Culture site which would not be the same without Coppermine gallery.

I'll be sure to give an excellent rating at Hotscripts.

Thank you for taking over the project.

Hi all.

I found this link a few time ago (don't remember how):

Take a look at the photo software. I would say it's basically the same.

Can't remember talking with Greg since i submitted the Norwegian language files, just a small update since.

Maybe he is out of time? Anyway, i think he will return back and find coppermine here.

Sorry if I missed something, but I found this: http://www.p-box.dk/manual_1.htm

It lacks the images, but hey ;)

Also, I'd like to apoligise about my post about Greg... I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to offend anybody. (I know that might sound lame)

P.S.: http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=138 > please add this to the downloads if possible

EDIT: and here's the original text from the site's main page:

Quote
Coppermine Photo Gallery is a picture gallery script.

Users can upload pictures with a web browser or Windows XP Web Publishing Wizard (thumbnails are created on the fly), add comments, send e-cards, rate pictures and have their own gallery.

The admin can manage albums/pictures/comments and batch add pictures that have been uploaded by FTP.

The script has a theme system and is available in the following languages: Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (standard and Brazilian), Russian, Slovenian, Spanish and Turkish.

The script uses PHP, a MySQL database and the GD library (version 1.x or 2.x) or ImageMagick to make the thumbnails. An install script makes the installation very fast and easy.

Watch the demo, download the script if you like it and use the forum if you need support.

What's most interesting to me about the site you posted is that they seem to be photos taken by Greg while on trips in Africa and Korea.  Let's hope he's out getting great pics of Antarctica to share with us!

I received a mail over the contact form on this site from Jacques who lives in Paris next door to Greg's last know address. He promised to take a look if his name is still on the doorbell and also check the mailbox.
EZ asked his relative who lives in Paris and is a lawyer to check on him too.
Best thing would be if anyone knew a french cop - they should be able to access all data about a person. Anyone knows a french cop?

I vote for not putting it into the release (only here on the site) - might turn out to be a chain mail after some time...

Not the entire site, only a few pages that are frequently used pages are cached.  Anyway, just to finish up this topic and for public informational purposes, we have recovered most of the stuff that's needed from the chezgreg.net. Depending on circumstances, we may have a reference board from chezgreg.net put up or integrated to the current board. That's still being ironed out.

On the lighter site, the new site should be up shortly.

Here's the eMail I received from Greg:
Quote
Hi Joachim,

So after a long time here are some news from me.

Some months a go, I had a sad event in my life and during some time I was not in a mood to do anything. In August I moved to Yokohama in Japan for my work and in order to have a big change in my life. I should stay there for two years.

In september, my webhost deactivated my website because it was repeatingly exceeding its allowed bandwidth. As I did not took my login password info with me in Japan, I have not been able to anything.

I am really happy to see that you have created coppermine.sourceforge.net and that other people are now involved in the development of the script. I am also glad to see that you have managed to obtain the db and file dumps from my webhost.

I am currently in France for some vacations and feel much better than some time ago. I also thank you for your "snail-mail". My work in Japan keeps me very busy and for the time being, I think I could hardly continue to work on the script with other people that have joined the project. So the script is yours now. Maybe in some months I I will have more free time and will be able to contribute to the script again or at least to the forums.

Once again thank you for having taken over the project, it would have been a pity that the script desappeared. I will contact my webhost in order to redirect www.chezgreg.net/coppermine to coppermine.sourceforge.net if you agree about that.

Best regards

Greg
