After following an existing thread about this same subject, I have discovered that my situation is somewhat different.
My PHP is 5.2.8, and I am using GD2
If I turn on CAPTCHA the normal user can never logon. In my previous 1.4 version of Coppermine I never had this issue.
Could you start out by showing me how to turn on debug, so I can go over some of the basics?
From there I will post whatever you need.
Currently the site has CAPTCHA OFF so it can be used.

Figured out how to turn on the debug and logging. Here is the output from trying to register someone with Captcha turned on.

You should *not* post the debug information unless requested as said (http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/configuration.htm?expand_all=1#debug_mode_do_not_post_unless_requested) in the documentation.
Currently the site has CAPTCHA OFF so it can be used.
That's very useful if you need help with it. You should also post login details for a test account (not an admin account) and enable again the captcha.

Sorry for the debug info. I didn't realize it was attached when I sent it.
The problem exists when anyone tries to register. I will turn on the captcha during reqistration so you can see what is going on.

An update - After re-enabling the captcha feature for registration, it seems to work! Don't know what i did...

Figured out how to turn on the debug and logging.
I guess you read that up in the docs... (turning on debug mode: http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/configuration.htm#debug_mode; enabling logging: http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/configuration.htm#admin_logging_log_mode).
