How many files would how recommend batch uploading at a time?

Depends on your server setup and the size and dimensions of the files uploaded. There can be no recommendation, as there are too many unknown factors. Respect board rules (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,55415.msg270616.html#msg270616) in the future.
