If you can find a server that will give you free access to PHP and MySQL, then you've found a server that can host Coppermine for free.

This is a good idea  :wink: .  We already have a thread which shows some very good, and reasonably priced hosts, but as most of us know, a lot of free hosts have all sorts of restrictions/ add ons that cause problems.

So a list of reliable free hosts would be welcome, along with the size of space allowed, and if things like databases actually cost.

I use http://www.aruba.it which for a little bit more thatn €33 a year, propose web hosting on linux apache servers, free web space and domain registration and, of course MySql database (50 MB), GD libraires and ImageMagick.

At the moment (just activated 2 weeks ago!) it seems OK :D

Hi Lordnet,

I know you are only trying to help nicky, but please post in English.

I understand nicky has trouble with English, so if you must post in Spanish, also post an English translation of the post, in the same message.

Others may then be able to help.  :wink:

Hi Jean Luc,

free.fr can be used for coppermine, but it has some peculiarities that make it important you follow the advice found here, http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/faq.php?q=CoppermineOnFranceFr#CoppermineOnFranceFr

It is also advised you search the board on free.fr.

www.pure-elite.com is offering free webspace with 500MB and unlimited transfer (they say they will institute a limit in the near future, though). They don't list mysql as a feature, but through some research, I found that they DO offer it as people are running phpnuke sites on their serviers. They also offer free FTP access (only 1 acct) and 1 email account as well. They give you a subdomain of their domains. I believe they offer 5 or 6 different ones. I have one myself just as a dumpspace for stuff so I don't have to waste my bandwith on my main server.

if anyone is interested, 50free (http://50free.com) is now offering more free web hosting.
doubling its space and transfers.
they have reduced or removed a lot of previously free features (but allowing you to upgrade). still a good deal with php, perl, cgi, mysql, ftp & no ads...which is great.

here's what they offer:
Domains - 1
SubDom. - 4
Aliases - 3
Emails - 3
Mailing lists - 0
IPs - 0
DataBases - 1
MySQL MB - 2
Traffic MB - 1000
Storage MB - 100

i used to host my sites with them...had a few minor downtime issues, but if you're not a busy site, it's a good deal.

I have web server space, and want to build a portfolio. I am offering limited free hosting to professional photographers/artists/designers. This includes tasteful fashion and modeling as well, but no sex, porn. All nude shots must meet 18 U.S.C. Section 2257 Compliance Notice regulations.

This is a limited time offer, and I reserve the right to be selective. (whaddya want for nothin) and is restricted to PROFESSIONAL (you make a living at it) photographers/artists/designers. If you meet these criteria, I can install for  you as well, but if you stick around, I would expect you would compensate me for the installation eventually. I have also successfully integrated the paypal hack, and have programmers working to port to oscommerce/authorize.net (progress to date, measured with a calendar).

I just discovered after 10 years of html'ing, that I can make templates, and a few will be showing up on download. I have GB's of stock images of cameras, weddings, etc....I also do custom backdrops.

Features below...its all you need, and easy to use. Of course, you can upgrade at any time as you grow, and we have rooms full of programmers for custom needs.

If  you need a dom, we are our own registrar (godaddy authorized reseller), and sell them for $9.95. We also use our own name servers.

FEATURES:

50 MB, 1 domain, 5 email accounts, 3 ftp accounts, 1 mysql 'base with phpmyadmin, 1 subdom, 3 email lists, cgi,

PREVIEW:

I have screenshots of the CPanel control panels in a coppermine gallery located at:

http://photo.oregonianad.com (http://photo.oregonianad.com)

The theme selector contains only my themes, with choice of colors. Obviously there are a few dozen on the download site.

If interested, email me at  info@pos.net

Yahoo/Geocities makes no mention of allowing php/mysql. Also, their free package does not even allow ftp upload, so in my opinion, I would avoid them even if they DID offer MySQL (they don't appear to).

This thread is meant to give recommendations for free webhosts that fulfill coppermine's minimum requirements. It is not meant to ask questions on webhost x, y or z. You can't run Coppermine on Tripod, as they inject ads into the output that will break Coppermine's functionality, so the short answer to your question is: yes, tripod webhosting is free, but you can't use it to host coppermine.

Surprisingly, free webhosting doesn't offer the same quality paid webhosting offers ::). Everybody who is using paid webhosting would be an idiot if the same amount of service was available for free as well.
Bottom line: you're welcome to try to find a free webhost that has the requirements to run coppermine. After having tried to find a decent free one, go for paid webhosting - it's very cheap these days. If you can't afford that, you don't need a web page of your own imo. Simply share your pics on Flickr then, or share your videos on youtube. Being too poor to be able to afford webhosting is nonsense (at least in western countries): one month of webhosting costs less than one burger at your favorite fast food chain.
I'm not an expert on free webhosting, but  as far as I understand there is only a very limited number of free webhosts available in the long run: free.fr (http://free.fr/) (French webhost with French user interface only) appear to be OK, and maybe funpic.org (http://www.funpic.org/) as well. Not sure about their availability in the long run.
Tripod and Angelfire definitely can't be used with Coppermine.

Title: my experience about free host
Post by: gbjuno on July 12, 2008, 08:13:03 pm
Nowadays there are so many web host claiming to be free but there aren't. A really free web host must have these characteristics:
- no catches, no setup fees, no forced advertising, no banners, no popups and no hidden charges
- allow you to setup every kind of website (personal, e-commerce, forums...) except illegal ones of course
- allow you to keep your hosting account as long as you wish.

I've tried so many (more than 200) and they don't deserve to be called free. But I never give up. Finally I've found a real one, and
since 18 months they've been hosting my three e-commerce website without any problem. These are their features:

* 350 MB Disk Space
* 100 GB Data Transfer
* cPanel Control Panel
* Website Builder
* 5 MySQL Databases
* PHP mail() function and Sendmail
* Curl, GD2 library, ImageMagick
* safe_mode  OFF, file uploads ON
* Zend Optimizer support, Ioncube loader.. and much more features are enabled
* Unrestricted PHP5 support of course
* Instant Setup with more than 40 popular scripts: Drupal, Geeklog, Joomla, Xoops, WordPress, b2evolution, Support Logic Helpdesk, phpBB2, SMF, OS Commerce, ViPER Guestbook, Coppermine Photo Gallery, PhpWiki, PHPauction, WebCalendar and more.
* 100% of satisfaction

I wish you success in all your initiatives. God bless you!

Really? Who makes up those rules? What do such super-webhosts get in return for their free webhosting then if they're not even allowed to advertize a little bit for their paid services? Who pays their servers? Who pays their traffic? Who pays their staff? Imo you have strange ideas about this business or you're not an actual user of the company you're trying to promote, but you're actually affiliated with them. You're redirecting to some kind of affiliate page, so stop it, will you? According to the home page of 000webhost.com, they only earn money from user donations, which I find hard to believe, as freed webhosting in this case tastes more like "free beer" than "freedom of speech".
Since we can't prove one thing or the other, let's not argue here, but leave it as it is: people who review this thread are welcome to make up their minds about this super-webhost...
You already had the previous posting in this thread - don't double-post! We have heard you.
Title: Re: Free web host supporting the Copermine requirements

I signed up to test. They seem to make money from donations and upgrades to premium accounts (a rather dubious claim of unlimited disk space and transfer for $5 per month). There is tracking/stats code appended to the page but no advertising. The only limitations I can see are an upload limit of 2MB and no ImageMagick support (exec() is disabled). Memory limit is 32M and max_execution_time is cut to 10 seconds which may affect things like batch add and admin tools. It meets the minimum requirements for Coppermine and is probably fine for low traffic galleries. Server is at HostNOC in Scranton, PA (USA). My test site is at http://nibbler.net78.net/. The MySQL server seems to be overloaded however, only static pages are responsive at the time of posting.

This affiliate program of this crappy 000webhost.com is driving me nuts: every now and then some jerk turns up and tries to earn a few bucks by promoting this crappy free webhost by dropping "his" affiliate link.
Let it end now: further ads for 000webhost.com are forbidden from now on. I will ban everybody instantly who promotes this webhosting site and will delete the advert at once.
Additionally, I have added 000webhost.com to the stop words.

Found this whilst browsing today: [/b]00webhost.com (this is an unsolicited advert that triggered the stop-word filter)/]http://www.000webhost.com (this is an unsolicited advert that triggered the stop-word filter)/ (http://www.0[b)

Only had a wee look so dont know how reliable it is, but if you create an account, there is a section that auto-installs (fantastico De Luxe 1) several Open Source projects including coppermine :)

Maybe you could read the threads you're replying to first >:(:  http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,5721.msg264946.html#msg264946
You're number 100 or so in an ever-increasing list of people who drop their (affiliate) link for that damn, crappy 000webhost freehost.
Nibbler has already reviewed that webhost's offer.
I don't care if that webhost is good or not, but their affiliate program really sucks! You shouldn't make fun of that, but in the country I come from "00" means "toilet", and that's what comes to mind when reading yet another posting about that webhost.
[/rant]
*whew*, sorry: had to blow off some steam.

We are offering free coppermine hosting (http://www.sosugary.com) at So Sugary.

We are ad supported so all galleries will need to display one of our banner ads.

Althought So Sugary is new, we do have experience in hosting coppermine as we also run a fan site host with over 300 coppermine installs. So we do know what we are doing (sort of :))

This is however a completely seperate service hosting only galleries. Photographer portfolios, family pictures, personal photos, or any photos really.

If you are interested in applying for a gallery, or for more information, please visit http://www.sosugary.com

Hope this will benefit some people.

Thank you :)

^ I posted an application about 3 days ago and no one's gotten back to me. I would really love to use So Sugary, the site I'm using now has so many issues with MySQL, it's ridiculous... (Surge8.com, btw... >_< )

If anyone has any other suggestions for free sites, I would gladly hear them.  :(

Stick to the open thread you have (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,62183.0.html) or resolve it. Finding another free webhost will not solve your issues if you have no idea how webhosting works. Don't expect to be spoon-fed.

Byethost supports coppermine

They give 5 GB space and 200 GB bandwidth with vistapanel (problem being they have disabled allow_url_fopen in php)

Waters is a spammer as well as Bigmen. Banned them/him and crippled the links so that therer's no benefit for the spammers. Don't dare to re-register.

@dlsjauv: your posting is useless without a link. Do not only dump nonsensical praise without posting even a link.

@all: this thread in entirely useless, as it only attracts spammers. Those who are looking for free webhosting should just google for that term. To figure out if the free webhosts they find using their search has the needed minimum requirements to host a coppermine-driven gallery, ask the free webhost or look up the coppermine minimum requirements (which can be found in the docs, link at the top of this screen) and compare those minimum requirements against what your webhost is offering. Do not ask us if a particular webhost will do or not.
