Title: "Make This My Icon" not sticking for one User
Post by: Colliope on November 12, 2008, 06:50:02 am
His most recently uploaded photo is the one that comes up as his Gallery icon.
Now matter how many times "Make this my Icon" is checked on the image he does want as his Gallery icon, the box remains unchecked after applying and thus it doesn't become his icon.
Temp solution was to delete the image he wants as his icon and re-upload, making it the last uploaded file and thus his icon, but that's going to change as soon as he uploads another file to his Gallery.

Is there something I can change manually in the database or one of the script files to fix this glitch?

(I did a search on this and came up only with the thread re Users only being able to choose icons from their own personal galleries which doesn't to this problem.)

Thanks,

Post a deep link next time this happens (before you delete and re-upload) to enable us to have a look (in fact you should always post a link to your gallery when starting a new thread). Nothing we could do now, as it's not a known issue.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "deep" link?

Normally I would post a link to the gallery in question, but this one is a family gallery I'm trying to keep from being picked up by search engines and so far so good. I'm afraid putting a public link to it somewhere will lead the bots to it. ??

Then what are supporters suppossed to do? Like I said: not a known issue. Would need looking into - if there was actually something to look at. As you deleted the file in question that caused issues, there's no real need for the link, as there would be nothing special we could look at. This being said: if the issue you reported happens again, don't delete and re-upload, but reply to this thread instead, doing as I said (posting a link).

It's pretty easy to cloak a link from bots and make it available to humans only. Example: coppermine (dash) gallery (dot) net (slash) demo (slash) cpg14x would be a cloaked link to our demo that humans can follow easily, but bots can't.
However, I don't believe in security by obscurity: stuff you put on the web can not be protected by not linking to it. You'll need to apply some sort of authentification. For a coppermine-driven family gallery, that's pretty straightforward: give user accounts to your family members, disallow guests to see anything from the gallery except the login page and disallow new registrations. All those things can be done using coppermine's user interface. I have little tolerance for playing hide-and-seek.

A link to the demo would be http://coppermine-gallery.net/Obsolete
A deep link would be http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/displayimage.php?pos=-125 if that link target was the file in question.
Supporters have asked users to post deep links. Searching the board for that term (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?action=search2;search=deep+link), googling for it (http://www.google.com/search?q=deep+link) or looking it up in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_link) would have told you what you need to do. Quote from Wikipedia:

Deep linking, on the World Wide Web, is making a hyperlink that points to a specific page or image on another website, instead of that website's main or home page. Such links are called deep links.

It wasn't one specific image that was the problem, the option wouldn't "stick" for any of the pics in his gallery. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my original post.

So are you saying that cloaking a link when posting in this forum is acceptable or not?

Yes, I'm already all protected via config in the way that best suits my needs.

That is certainly your preference, but mine is to not have this particular gallery indexed on search engines.

Then why not just say "post a link to the specific file that is giving you a problem" to avoid confusion?

At any rate - here is the follow up to the problem.

In experimenting with 3 different users this morning I discovered that the problem exists for all of them - "make this my icon" won't stick for any of them no matter what pic in their gallery they choose.
However, there are two ways to get to that box to check.
One is by going to the image view page for the pic you want to use, clicking "edit file information" and checking the option there to "make this my icon".
The other is by going to the album that contains the pic you want to use, clicking "edit files", then scrolling down to the pic you want to use and checking the "make this my icon" box there.
In my case, the former does not work - checking "make this my icon" via "edit file information" does not work - but checking it via the album option to "edit files" DOES work. I will make a note of that somewhere for my Users.

Without insisting I post a link to the gallery or specific pic in inside it, can you tell me if this is normal behavior or not?

Thanks,
C

Supporter_s_? Joachim, I followed the search result of the boards you posted above and it was quite interesting.
Of the first 15 threads after this one in the results (I did not look any further than that), YOU were the only person to ask for a "deep" link.  And after your terse orders to post one, none of the original posters came back to reply (with or without a link), except for two who dared ask what a "deep" link was and were then chased off by your snide remarks to them.

So it's pretty clear that your stock response to "read the doc and post a 'deep' link" is not helpful and that your egotistical and condescending attitude towards those who ask what you mean is quite offensive. And frankly, in asking for a "deep" link in cases where it won't help, it just makes you look nosy.

I appreciate your answer to my question a few days ago, but I have seen your true colors now and can only hope that when I have future questions that someone kinder than you will respond.

Because I don't want a deep link to a file, but to a gallery page that embedds the file.

It wasn't one specific image that was the problem, the option wouldn't "stick" for any of the pics in his gallery. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my original post.
Then post a link to your gallery and a non-admin test user account to allow us (or, if you insist: me) to replicate your issues.

And frankly, in asking for a "deep" link in cases where it won't help, it just makes you look nosy.
It's up to me to decide what I need to support. It's so much easier if you have a link to a gallery to understand what the issue of the poster is. Imo you haven't searched thoroughly: the other supporters may just name their requests differently, but they ask for the same thing.

OK, fine. I'm out of this thread, it is open for whoever wants to answer.
