Title: Advertisement before real video
Post by: Fabricio Ferrero on November 08, 2008, 08:49:30 pm
I think that could be very important for big sites to have an option to include a small video as advertisement before playing the real video that the user wants to watch. This feature it's avaliable in Yahoo for example. As many others.

What do you think?

With all due respect for your contributions, but I don't think that such a feature should go into the core. Coppermine is being released under GNU GPL, so commercial sites are welcome to use it as well, but they should add such an option on their own. The web is already infested with adverts - we don't focus on making adverts easier. Something like the feature you propose would be welcome as a mod or plugin, but won't go into the core.

Ok, I said that because there is a lot of user that likes mod about all types of advertisement. But, on the other side, it's true what you says.

Thanks anyways,  ;)

P.S: If someone comes up with a plugin or mod, I'll sure that several users are going to implement it.  ;)

Yes, there are lots of users who ask for banner rotation scripts or how to implement google's adwords or similar to coppermine-driven pages. But take at the sites those people ask support for: 99% of them are irrelevant in terms of page rank, so the revenue gained by adwords or similar programs will be just pennies per year. People scare away visitors by adding ads to their sites that they can't even start to make a living on. What you need to make money is good content. That's something most users don't have. Most think that they can get away with running a fan site where they host pics showing celebrities that someone else has taken or paid for. They just steal those images, upload them to their site and rely on others fans coming to their sites and clicking through thousands of paparazzi shots.
If we added a feature like the one you propose, there would even be more morons who added adverts to their sites without realizing that they won't actually earn money from it, infesting the internet with even more crap. Site owners who actually have quality content and a relevant number of site visitors will be able to add adverts no matter if there is a pre-configured interface in coppermine or not.
There are more important features imo that should go into coppermine's core, simply because regular site owners who run coppermine won't be able to do the modifications by themselves.

I Agree too.

You (as a power user and contributor) are welcome to check out the dev version of coppermine and test it. Please read up http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/dev_subversion.htm#subversion
If you want it "easy", that's fine - everybody loves easy. Just grab a tarball (http://coppermine.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/coppermine/trunk/cpg1.5.x.tar.gz?view=tar) - this will allow you to get the most recent dev code without the need to fiddle with SVN client applications.
