Had been setting up this install for about 2 weeks when, while posting a new category, the submit button seemed not to work. Hit ir a couple more times, went out and returned and tried entry again. Seemed not to work.
When checking category list, category name had been registered 4 times. Went back to CatMgr to delete the excess and received "Internal Error".
Deleted extra names directly from database but didn't solve access problem.
Stopped working at about the 150th category mark. Have about 1000 albums and 200 or so files.
Can enter category names directly to database and rest of system works fine.
Since database appears OK, thought maybe bad file so re-loaded catmgr.php. No help.
Is there a maximum category limit or some limitation imposed by PHP?

There is no limit imposed by Coppermine. The category manager does not scale well, it's a known problem. I have posted an alternative catmgr.php file that supports pagination. Search the board for it and see if that helps.
