Title: Small GIF thumbs
Post by: cedriclr on October 21, 2006, 01:36:31 pm
Hello all,

Well, i'm working with black and white gifs and i noticed small thumbs with Coppermine were horribles :-(

Currently i'm using another script called MG2 and all is fine !

What's wrong with Coppermine and Gifs ?

Post a link. Make sure you are not using GD1.

I added one of your files to my test gallery and the thumbnail created was perfectly fine with GD2. Make sure your GD is up to date or try using ImageMagick if available.

I cannot understand, i'm currently using another script (MG2) and thumbs are quite perfect !

See the difference:

I'm convinced that you're using the wrong method for resizing pics. Go to your coppermine config, expand the "Files and thumbnails advanced settings" section and take a screenshot. Attach the screenshot to your posting.

Here is what I've found on MG2 FAQ:
Due to copyright issues surrounding the GIF format, support for it was removed from GD lib, until the patents ran out and it has now been reintroduced (but most servers still uses the old version).

Because of this, GD lib can't create GIF's but it can read them fine. Therefore MiniGal makes thumbs for GIF files using JPG format. And JPG does not support transparency so that's why you get black backgrounds where they should have been transparent.

GIF support has been restored in GD lib, but for maximum compatability MG2 will continue using this method until the GD version with GIF support is widely used.

This is not related to coppermine!

MG2 will create JPG thumbnail from GIF and this way your thumbnail looks better
You can create JPG  from orginal GIFs and then upload them by CPG and get the same result

Replaced hotlinked stuff with attachments in your postings above. Please do as suggested in the future.

It's not there for you. We had to remove it because there have been some jerks who constantly edited out their questions after they have been answered, leaving the thread useless. Drwaback: legitimate use of the edit function removed as well.
