Hi
 will coppermine be able to handle thousands of images with probably hundreds of albums?
What about https login?

Yes, but the real limit is your server. I don't know about https login, I dont have access to a server with SSL.

My personal gallery currently contains "12299 files in 283 albums and 29 categories" and runs flawlessly. We consider a gallery of that size a medium/intermediate sized gallery, there are much larger galleries. Check out the thread Share your galleries (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=22690.0) and the subsequent links posted in that thread to get an idea how well Coppermine performs.
