Title: Batch add files stopped working-blank page
Post by: mike909 on June 28, 2006, 08:46:09 pm
Ok, I searched for about an hour and I have solved many problems from other posts on this board, but I seriously couldn't find an answer to this question, so I registered. Ok, basically I'm having same problem as this guy (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=32873.0) except of course, I'm not a rude jackass and I appreciate any help. Here it is: Been using the gallery fine for about a month now without problems, and I have not changed anything, but now the 'batch add files' doesn't work. It just brings me to a blank page. No error message. It sais in the bottom task bar "waiting for mikealbano.com" and nothing ever happens. After about a minute the 'waiting for...' message goes away from the bottom of the browswer window, and page is blank (changes to "done"). Things I have tried include the following:
-tried it on different computer (w/ different ip address)
-tried it on IE and Firefox...same result.
-uploaded a fresh 'searchnew.php' file
-created new administrator user and tried it with him
edit:-forgot to mention, also tried switching from browsable to the other interface.
I did see a thread about changing a timeout in php.ini but it explained that it cures something to do with an error message (and i'm not getting an error message), so I have not tried that...also, I don't see any php.ini.
I am using the latest stable 1.4.8 and have checked permisions (all are ok...like I said, it was working fine, just stopped out of the blue). Far as I can tell, my web-host hasn't changed anything, but who knows. Since Coppermine was working perfect, and all of a sudden isn't...they probably did change something related to timeout's or something...that's what i'm trying to figure out.
link to my website (http://www.mikealbano.com/Coppermine)
I have debug output, but this page (http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#upload_trouble) sais not to post untill requested. Again, I am a decent forum searcher in both this problem and many others, so I hope this hasn't been addressed. (I allways feel guilty starting new threads...I should see someone about that)
edit:Just noticed that when on browsable interface, the bottom browser bar doesn't sit there saying "waiting for mikealbano.com" it just sais done immediately (with the blank page)

Don't all answer at once now. Just kidding, I love this photo gallery and the forum support here is awesome. Since I couldn't really add any more albums easily, I looked into that xp_publish method, and it totally rocks. Super easy...even easier than the batch add. So I guess it's not a total emergency for me anymore, though I would still like to figure it out. Only thing i don't like about the xp_publish is the folders it creates...kind of messes up my organization on the web server, but I'm gonna do some searching on that (seperate issue).

Thanks for the link, but not sure what you are pointing at. If it was just to let me know how to set it up...I figured that out allready (not much to figure out, it's super easy). The only issue I have with xp_publish is described in this thread (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=33335.msg155347#msg155347). It went unanswered, so I guess it wasn't as easy of a question as I thought.
So noone knows about the 'blank page' mystery? So odd that it was working fine for that long..got like 30 albums in there or so, then it just stopped for no reason.

I have the same problem... it is a mystery! Maybe a server problem? Why in 2005 works? searchnew.php = 'blank page' or (if I put new searchnew.php file in server), didn't show any folder to open and see files...

tks!

Re-read the upload troubleshooting section of the docs that I refered to and do exactly as suggested there.

@mike909: how many files are you trying to batch add? and on what step of batch addition does it hangs?

@Abbas Ali: I have this problem too, 1 click on batch-add in the admin cpanel and it loads a blank page, I'm uploading 50 files at a time. Does it matter if I have over 10,000 files uploaded by batch-add already?

Any help will be great

Regards, will ;D

It's because your webhost is too restrictive, PLUS PHP isn't reporting errors.

My advice:  See if you can increase PHP's memory usage and execution time via htaccess

If not, look for another host or go the VPS/dedicated route.

I can try to add 1 file or 50 files, doesn't matter, just loads the blank page when I click 'batc add'.

Not sure how to increase the memory usage...but if it's the webhost that is too restrictive (netfirms.com), then I guess I will have to use the xp_publish method.
Re-read the upload troubleshooting section of the docs that I refered to and do exactly as suggested there.
Will do.

Ok, re-read it and followd the directions. As I said before, the page sais not to post dubug output unless specifically requested, but I think GauGau is asking for it since he pointed to the page...so here it is. As I said before, the page sais not to post dubug output unless specifically requested, but I think GauGau is asking for it since he pointed to the page...so here it is.
No, I'm not. I asked you to do as suggested on the upload troubleshooting section (apply the needed settings and post test user account). I didn't ask you to post debug_output.
This thread is leading nowhere, I'm out of it.

A test user account has also been created. The username is: testuser and the password is: test
Not sure if you saw that or not, but it sounds like youve been pissed off. Sorry for that...Ive just been trying to interpret your request's. It seems like you want to help, and it also seems that others are having this problem. Anyway, ive apparently driven you off. Have a nice day.

Ok, well apparently I will recieve no help on this and I don't want to leave the gallery in debug mode for no reason. If anyone feels like spending time on this issue I would be glad to re-enable both debug mode and the test user account, and do whatever sort of testing anyone wants.

P.S.
Please don't mistake this for a complaint...it's not. I love the software, it's free and I've gotten worse support from Cisco who my company pays thousands of dollars for.

@mike909: If you are happy to give me the ftp and cpg admin access via PM then i can look into it.

I didn't got time to look into the issue in great details. I think it has something to do with output buffer or cache.

I have inserted two echo(s) in searchnew.php and now the batchadd page is coming fine...But if i remove those two echo statements then the page doesn't loads. Please check now whether you can use batchadd or not.

Yes, it appears to be functioning properly now. I was able to batch add a new album. (July-2006, under 'Tyler' category)

Abbas,
I batch-added a bunch of new albums...thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it. I am however experiencing a new problem and I want to make sure it's unrelated to what you are doing. My CPG (http://mikealbano.com/Coppermine) is now very very slow and randomly does not work (blank page/page cannot be displayed either on index.php or when browsing through CPG). I don't think it's the host because my main page works fine, and I will be seeking help on it. Before I do though, I just wanted to make sure it's not because of something your experimenting on in my CPG or something like that. Once again, thanks for your help.

No, it doesn't have anything to do with it. I just put two statements in searchnew.php file and both statements just prints "HERE". The original file was backed up as searchnew.php.org . If you wish you can revert the changes by renaming the backed up file. I didn't touched/edited any other file.

@Abbas Ali

since more people seem to have this problem (including myself sometimes ;) ) would you like to share the solution?

In my case I just had to reload the page over and over again until some else than the balnk page came up, once the structure of the directorys was shown I could do anything without errors. but the initial loading of the file is a sort of pain in the #ss

I even shut down the gallery when I wanted to add files to prevent users excecuting sql querys (I thought that the server was just being to busy...)

but it seems you found out another thing, would you like to share it?

There was no good solution. I had just inserted two statements in searchnew.php to echo HERE. I won't call it a solution though.

Try NOT choosing the browseable interface.

xplicit,
I have to do the same thing. The page comes up blank allways on the first try, but if I refresh it a bunch of times it eventually comes up and works as it should.

I will try and see if I can come up with a workaround, problem is that on my testing server everything works perfect but well I'm the only user of it :) Testing on real servers of clientss is always a thing I like to minimize but I will see what I can do.

Hiya

I had the same problem, i click on batch upload and firefox would try download searchnew.php

Added an echo command to searchnew.php and it fixed the problem :)

Thanks for your time on this matter, i will try contact my webhost to see if they changed anything to do with php since the last time i uploaded

It seems it got a lot to do with the number of albums in the album map.

The scanning of the names in the  directory albums seems to be the hardest part, once the titles of directories are known it all works fine.

I must admin this matter sort of slipped my mind, was to busy programming other websites but those are finished last weekend so will put this on my todo list again :)

Code: [Select]
function display_dir_tree($folder, $ident)
{
    global $CONFIG, $PHP_SELF, $lang_search_new_php;
    $dir_path = $CONFIG['fullpath'] . $folder;

    if (!is_readable($dir_path)) return;

    $dir = opendir($dir_path);
    while ($file = readdir($dir)) {
         if (is_dir($CONFIG['fullpath'] . $folder . $file) && substr($file,0,1) != "." && strpos($file,"'") == FALSE && $file != "userpics"  && $file != "edit" ) {
            $start_target = $folder . $file;
            $dir_path = $CONFIG['fullpath'] . $folder . $file;

            $warnings = '';
            if (!is_writable($dir_path)) $warnings .= $lang_search_new_php['dir_ro'];
            if (!is_readable($dir_path)) $warnings .= $lang_search_new_php['dir_cant_read'];

            if ($warnings) $warnings = '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>' . $warnings . '<b>';

            echo <<<EOT
                        <tr>
                                <td class="tableb">
                                        $ident<img src="images/folder.gif" alt="" />&nbsp;<a href= "$PHP_SELF?startdir=$start_target">$file</a>$warnings
                                </td>
                        </tr>
EOT;
            display_dir_tree($folder . $file . '/', $ident . '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;');
        }
    }
    closedir($dir);
}

Well as far as I can see quickly the function display_dir_tree is calling itself within the display_dir_tree function. This could be a potential source for an infinit loop

@depach: Try removing the echo statement and modifying the display_dir_tree function as mentioned below..

Add (in function display_dir_tree)

Code: [Select]
set_time_limit(60);

just after

Code: [Select]
if (!is_readable($dir_path)) return;

@xplicit: You can also try the same.

@all "newcomers" to this thread: do not assume that you have the same issue the original thread starter had. Don't draw false conclusions just by the fact that you have issues with batch-add: as server-setups differ, the possible reasons for batch-add not working as expected are manifold. Therefor, you mustn't blatantly try to hijack this thread, but do exactly as suggested in the upload troubleshooting section of the docs (http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#upload_trouble) (in a thread of your own). Only if the supporter taking care of your support request advises you to reply to this thread, you're allowed to do so.
From now on, I will delete all replies to this thread of posters who don't have written permission by supporters in their own thread that they are allowed to reply here. I'm not saying this to bring you down, but to make sure that this thread remains usefull for everyone and doesn't get cluttered with individual issues. The board rules exist for very valid reasons, so please don't start a meta discussion about it here.
