Post by: Sami on June 05, 2006, 03:36:53 pm
don't you think it's time to change the coppermine's logo?
also I found an old poll with "logo competition" title but it's dead!!! why?
the link is :http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=1611.20

Hehe, I agree that it's about time for a new logo competition, and it's on the to-do list for quite some time already ;). We haven't come up with suggestions though for valid submissions - maybe you could come up with some suggestions. Keep in mind that the logo should work in many resolutions (from icon / mini banner to full-sized banner) and with as many backgrounds as possible. The logo should be light-weight, easy to recognize and unique. It should work on all kinds of backgrounds.
We'd appreciate if you could submit suggestions for validity criteria and maybe a teaser that will make people submit their contribution. The link to the old logo poll is http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=1611.0 btw.

Cheers Joachim

OK... I can help out but need a couple of days as I have some traveling to do for my job. I searched through the link you provided and found this information from 2003 in this post http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=348 (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=348):

- button 80 x 31
- button 88 x 31
- mini-banner 156x60
- half-size banner 234x60
- full-size banner 468x60

Does this still hold true and if so, we can use this as the starting rules.

Here are some ideas for rules (borrowed from the freebsd project logo contest). They seem rough and tough but in today's world of lawsuits, they may be necessary.
Quote
* Rules

Purpose
The main logo symbol for the Coppermine Photo Gallery Project, which will be
used for the web site, software media labels, printed matter and so on.  This list is not exhaustive.

Guidance
   * The logo must be identifiable directly to the Project.
   * The logo must be original work of the submitter.
   * The logo should be usable in monochrome and color media,
including limited colors (say 2 or 3 colors).
   * The logo must not exploit or offend anyone's sex, race,
religion, morality, culture, nor be salacious or
     pornographic..

Submission deadline
   ? <insert date here>

Participation
The competition is open to all designers, both professional
and non-professional.  Participation can only take place in a
   private personal capacity.

Prize
The undying gratitude of the Coppermine Photo Gallery community

Submission format
Each submission should include the following information and
should be sent to <insert link here>:

   * JPEG, GIF or PNG thumbnail with a resolution of <insert dpi here>.
   * Design concept / description.
   * Submitter's full name, email address.

Copyright assignment
The Coppermine Photo Gallery Project will acquire ownership of the winning
logo by assignment of copyright, and the winning designer will
disclaim any trademarks and without limitation all other
   rights related to the design.

By submitting a logo for entry in the competition, the
designer acknowledges that he/she is the person that made the
logo and is its rightful owner and reliquishes all rights subject to the above
        statement.

The designer also certifies that the logo does not infringe
upon the rights of any third party and that it does not
   violate any copyright.

Compensation
   * Designs will not be returned to the designers.
   * No responsibility can be accepted for entries that are lost,
     delayed or damaged.
   * Any submissions which does not satisfy the above "submission
format" will be ignored without any warning.

In my opinion, I think the person submitting the logo should be a user of CPG and supply a link to their gallery. What do you think? Yes they can download and set up a gallery just for this contest but at least they used the product.

Comments, additions and rejections?

Cheers,

Billy

We could create an album on the demo page where users are allow to upload to - makes it much easier to manage (admin approval turned on).

sounds good  :)
- set the rules (complete billy's rules)
- create an album
- make an announcment
and ...
In my opinion ,it's better if we create a sign (special object for CPG i.e. just like mambo do) then use it to create icon , banner and etc.

This is from the Mambo site. Is this what you mean by "sign"? If so, I think you're right. Looking through the Mambo site, you can see it used throughout the site such as in a paragraph in the online demo area and it gives a nice distinction.  :)

Can the Devs chime in on this? You are the ones who hold CPG on your shoulders and your comments and approval are requested.  ;D

Yes, as basic icon or mascot that can be distinguished from other icons would be best. Of course you can't re-invent the Tux-penguin all the times. A pun with the words copper + mine comes to mind. ;)

yes, that's what I'm talking about.a unique, simple and nice sign and then we can using that to create full logo and banner...

I would prefer to get the best design regardless of whether they use Coppermine... just given the nature of the product and users, not that there aren't users with graphic design skills. :)

I'll finish off the rules over the weekend. Some things that need to be ironed out:

1. start and finish of contest. Finish date can be 30, 45 or 60 days after start date. Choose one.

2. Submissions require you to register with the forum so that we can contact winner.

3. How many entries per person (in the case of Dr Preacox, he can only submit and vote as a single personality!)? Should we break the contest into categories such as sign/favicon, banner, etc or must each entry include all?

4. I assume after the deadline, we then set up the voting for how many days?

5. I've ran into this problem before: someone makes a submission then someone else comes along, steals it and makes only minor mods to it to make it better. Should we allow this? Ways to prevent this is to make a private gallery where only the devs can see them until time to vote or announce the contest but only take submissions for 2 or 3 days at the end of the contest. I'm OK with whatever you decide and notice that I put all the headaches on the devs! Ahhh... to be lowlife!!!  LOL!!!

Cheers!!!
